his candidacy for sheriff in g
this issue. ^
The stores in Bamberg now close i
at six o'clock every day except Sat- t
urday. The early closing commenced I
last Monday. a
The Fitting School base ball team t
went to Denmark Monday afternoon c
and played a game with a team from s
that town. The Fitting School boys
won, the score being five to two. c
The Home Mission Society will c
hold its regular monthly meeting <next
Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock t
in the ladies' parlor of the Metho- t
dist church.

The rain of last Saturday was very .
u
refreshing to the trees and flowers,
g
and the farmers were mighty glad
to see it, as it caused the seed which ^
they had put in the ground to sprout.
We have received a postal from a
Mr. Philip Murphy. He says the trip p
v so far has been delightful, and the a
roads fine. He says receiving The
Herald is just like getting a letter n
from home. 0
Everybody is cordially invited to a
" attend the exercises, rendered by the fi
children of Cuffy Creek school, t<
Thursday evening, April the 25th, r
at eight o'clock. The program will i]
consist of plays, drills and recita- tl
tions. v
\
Last week we stated that the Car- x
lisle Fitting School gave holiday p
from Friday to Wednesday on ac- t
count of Easter, but this was an er- ^
T
ror. A few of the students went
home to" spend Easter, but there was c'
no holiday and the regular work ^
was done. Cl
a
Thp Otterbein male quartette, jj
which appeared here Monday even- a
ing, was the last attraction on the
lyceum course for this season. This p
company hc.s appeared here before ^
and it does not seemed to have im
. proved any. The audience was not e
so highly pleased with the entertainment.
We are requested by the pastor,
*
Rev. E. A. McDowell, to say that the
series of meetings anounced by him ^
to be held in the Ehrhardt Baptist T
church next week, in which he was
o
to hare been assisted by Evangelist
L. A. Cooper, has been called off, and ^
will be held one month later, beginning
3rd Sunday, 19th of May.
Protracted services will begin at c:
the Methodist church next Sunday c
and continue throughout the week, o
Two services a day will be held, one
in the afternoon and one at night, v
/ The pastor will be assisted by Rev.
E. H. Qpman, an evangelist, of Le- b
noir, N. C. The public is cordially o
invited to attend all the services. tl

As to Working the Roads. b
The method pursued by the authorities
in working the roads of the ^
county does not seem to be popular. ^
Messrs. G. E. Hutto and J. W. Hill
were in our office last Saturday af- T
ternoon and were outspoken in ^
their disapproval of the way in ^
which the commutation road tax is
n
being spent. Mr. Hutto says if the ^
road tax collected in his township ^
could be turned over to the reliable
citizens of that township that they ^
would see that better results were
obtained for the money spent. There
is no charge that the money is being
wrongfully spent, but it is claimed
that the method of employing an
overseer in each township who works
only a small gang of hands is too ^
expensive and runs into too much ^
money for the pay of overseers. We j.
had intended to get some facts and ^
figures in regard to the fund this ^
week, but have been too busy. In
justice to the county board we wanted
to publish the number of hands
in each road gang and the number of ..
days they ' had worked, and how
much had been paid for overseers,
etc., in each township. Possibly if ^
these facts are made public those
who now oppose the present method j
of spending this money will realize t

Greater publicity in our county affairs
would we believe do away with
much dissatisfaction in many in- ^
stances, for often no doubt the tax r
payers are dissatisfied because they
are not in possession of the facts.
In order to allav any dissatisfacc
tion and to secure the best results
in this road matter, we would sug- j
gest to the county board that it
might be well to confer with the
iorvovorc anH hpst hnsinpss ;

of each township before pro- c
ceeding further. We are not trying c
to attend to their business, under- 2
stand, and we only suggest this that i
the most good may come from the 1
expenditure of this money and criti- t
cism kept down.
