Garland's Slayer Weeps < The Jury Stood 11 Hno For .Ii VA1V wa w ^ < Opelousas, La., April 2.?Mrs. Zee Runge McRee, who shot her young friend, Allen Garland, to death in her home here September 21 last, was today acquitted by a jury of the charge of manslaughter. The jury stood 11 for acquittal and one for justification k ^ as charged. Holding her golden-haired little daughter, Vallera, in her arms and J with tears streaming down her cheek, j Mrs. McRee arose as soon as the foreman had announced the verdict. < "Your Honor,'.' she said, "may I thank the jurymen?" < * Judge Peavy readily granted the request and the happy little woman : walked over and shook hands with < each juryman who had voted for her , acquittal. After the first ballot last night ] they reported to the court that an j agreement was not possible and ( Judge Peavy told them to continue ] their deliberations. The second bal- j lot to-day brought eleven of the twelve men into agreement and the < verdict was reported at 10:30 < o'clock. t On the first trial JNIrs. McRee was t charged with murder. "I 6 vas excited," she raid, "and shot to t protect my honor." 1 Unsuccessful efforts were made by :he State to prove that too intimate relations existed between Mrs. McRee md the boy she shot and it was linted that her motive was jealousy. * [t was admitted that the two were d >ften in each other's company, but ;he defence maintained that Allan ? Dean is dead, his mother, Mrs. Mary i Dean, is probably fatally shot, and a i rounger son is badly wounded as a c esult of a shooting affray at the i Dean house, 20 miles south of here, J sarly to-day. The shooting was done i >y three Dean brothers and Steve ( Tompkins, a middle-aged white man. c According to reports received here, c Tompkins had bedn visiting Mrs. j Dean and had been warned to cease lis visits by the sons. When he call- s >d again last night, a quarrel en- c ued, in which, according to Tomp- s iins, one of the Dean boys fired jthe t irst shot and in the tussle over the c I listol John Dean was killed. Another version of the shooting is hat Tompkins had ordered the Deans rom their home and when they disegarded his orders he went to the ^ louse and flourished a pistol over the )eans causing the shooting. Tomp:ins was arrested. He is a married nan with a family. Engineer Injured. \ Chester, April 5.?J. M. Sellers, ngineer of the Southern local freight Co. 63, was painfully injured last light at Blackstock, Chester county, bout 12 .miles from here, when his ngine, which was temporarily in harge of his fireman, split the witch in leaving the siding, and urned over on its side, pinning the ngineer beneath the massive frame rork, of the cab. The engine turned almost completely over on its ack, leaving the drivers up in the ir and still running. But for the act that the engine fell across a hallow ditch Sellers might have een instantly crushd to death. Luckily the little ditch afforded im enough space to squeeze from eneath the tons of iron and steel. i Mr. Sellers was accompanied to g harlotte last night by Dr. S. G.
