New Trial Denied Florence County Men by Jndge Prince. , Florence, Oct. 14.?Judge Prince, in the court of general sessions here t6-day, refused to grant a new trial to William Burroughs and Alex Weldon, the two negroes who were' convicted for the killing of Mr. Elihu ATnvp at his home at Ebenezer last winter. The motion was made by their attorney, Col. W. F. Clayton, and a request by P. A. Wilcox, Esq. Judge Prince took the matter under advisement yesterday, and after investigation decided that Burroughs and Weldon had had a fair and impartial trial. They were resentenced to be hanged Friday, November 3, three weeks from yesterday, the day on which they appealed for a new trial. The only hope for a stay of execution now left these two men is at the hands of Gov. Blease, to whom Mr. Clayton will present a petition asking for executive clemency in their behalf. There are many people in Florence and Florence county who are of the opinion, and conscientiously so, that the man who knew all about the killing of Moye has paid the death penalty and that if Burroughs and Weldon will suffer. Newport, Ky., Oct. 15.?The little village of South Gate was thrown into excitement late last night, when a-fashionably dressed woman, giving the name of Mrs. Ellen Harrison, of Columbus, Ohio, attacked another woman with a large "blacksnake" whip. Mrs. Harrison, it is alleged, went to Cincinnati yesterday to search for her husband, who, she charges, deserted her and her son, eight years old, for a chorus girl playing at on'e rs.P +V>? Mrs. Harrison stepped from the shadows, in which she had been lurking, and began plying the lash with vengeance. The man did not stop to see what was going on, but hit the high places in a hasty retreat. The screams of the strange woman startled the quiet villagers, but both assailant and assailed quickly disappeared. Nonsuit Granted in Tillman Case. Edgefield, Oct. 17.?Judge Memminger granted a nonsuit this afternoon in ithe case brought by Mrs. Lucy Dugas Tillman against her husband, B. R. Tillman, Jr., to recover ? nnn Mrs. Tillman alleged in her complaint that moneys approximating this sum had been paid her husband and that he did not properly account for them to her. The nonsuit was ordered on the ground that the proof was at variance with the allegations of the complaint. No fraud was alleged in the complaint. I Owing to the prominence of the plaintiff and defendant, the case has attracted considerable attention. Two Dead After $1,500 Spree. Boston, Mass., Oct. 14.?After having spent $1,500 which was left to William Colvin, of Portland, Me., by his mother, who died a short time ago, Colvin and Charles Percival, of East Boston, are dead to-night. Both ricvotha a^/irdin? to the medical ex aminer, were due to alcoholism. Colvin received the $ 1,500 a week ago and immediately came to Boston and met Percival. After "seeing" Boston they went to New York., When Percival and Colvin returned to Boston after three diys they were without a cent. Tom Moore, serving a life sentence for killing his brother, and John Watts, in for 20 years for murder, gagged the guard, named Bloodworth, secured his revolver and took to the woods. Minor was the leader of the gang, which on the night of February 18, held up a Southern Railway train at Gainesville, Ga., and blew the express safe and got a considerable sum of money. He was captured and given 20 years. He was wanted in Washington State and British Columbia for train hold-ups. A w K A ?
