ONLY A DREAM.

"Old Timer" Tells a Story of the
tv /
Long Ago.
Wanderer's Rest, June 27.?The
old men shall see visions, and so they
do, for a certain old man saw one
in his dreams last week. A most
beautiful one came to him with teeth
of pearls, a lovely face, and sweetest
smiles; with laughing eyes of azure
blue and dark hair that hung in
beautiful waves and was clad in a
rich gown of spotless white, not befrilled
but hung in graceful folds
over a form of perfect shape. In
fact the beauty of the vision woke
him and on awakening the clock
struck two, and in an oak not far
from his window a mocking bird was
sending forth his happiest strains in
the moonlight so bright and soft,
which brought back Hawthorne s
song?
"Oft in the stilly night,
When all is calm around me,
Fond memory brings the light
Of other days around me."
And as he listened at the song
of the mocking bird, and thought of
fcv- >*..' the vision, then visions of the far-1
f1 away South-west came back again,
and one day that a party of seven
jolly young men took a trip over the
\V 1 . \ plains with Pedro, a Mexican boy,
as driver, and as the sun went down
behind the coast range mountains
i > V with the sunbeams glistering on the
peaks, with the Twin Brother
mountains standing silent but grand
' sentinels to the North and old
Baldy North of East with the sun
ftfe- light still glistning on the snow that
& r. was fourteen thousand feet above sea
level we drove up to a large Mexi|~v
can house built of adobe, with palms
and vines, lemons, oranges, in fact
nestled among the beauties of subtropicial
verdure. Was asked a
* night's lodging which in true Western
hospitality was granted and all made
to feel welcome, and the kind host
/proved to be an Arizona cattle king
who had bought this little Eden
from a wealthy Mexican to spend in
peace and comfort his declining
years in view of the broad Pacific,
while his sons looked after his flocks
t ; and herds as they grazed over the
Arizona plains.
Soon supper was announced and
while seated there he gave a slight
W history of his life, and was from
I Louisiana. Then wanted to know
where each one was from. Four
hailed from Texas, one from Illinois,
one from Iowa and one from South
v Carolina. When the last named was
called a tall spare built man with
t blue eyes and long grey locks who
had been the silent one sprang up
f and said: "Give me your hand; 1
am from the old North State and we
, ;; are cousins, and I am truly glad to
' see one from the home States, and
namo ia PharlAR Smith." and this
Sis the man that came as the full
moon shone and the mocking bird
was singing, and of him this story
i hangs.
"Come," said he as soon as supv
per was over, "I want to have a talk
with you all alone, and we will go
on the piazza facing the ocean where
!' you can see the light from the light
house and the lights of the ships as
they plow through the waters of the
f mighty Pacific twenty miles away,
also a fine view of the electric lights
from the city, Los Angeles, eighteen
miles away," and he was right for
with the soft Southern breeze blowing
and the crescent moon hanging
in the west mountains looming in
the distance all made a scene never
?&?*. to be forgotten.
After being seated he cut a piece
of tobacco put it in his mouth and
was silent for a few moments, then
|t v he said: "Yes, I am from old North
Carolina, came here in '49; yes I
Ih:-.,.. . am a forty-niner, took the gold

way back East, father and mother
and a pretty little mountain girl that
was to marry me when I got back
with my fortune and we would be
happy forever, but the last word
my mother said to me was 'be honest, i
Charlie, if we never meet again,' and
her words have rung in my ears each
day since, and they saved me once,
for as I have said my claims were
not paying ones. While I never supposed
I. could not find a rich strike
like some, one morning I took a
near cut from my cabin to my claim
and ran into a-large pot of gold
dust hidden in the brush. Then
came thoughts of father and mother
far away in the old home, how I
did long to go back once more, but
I knew the sold was not mine so
went on. Next day I just had to go
by that gold dust, and the third one
I stood by it a long time, almost taking
the pot in spite of all that I
could do, but mother's words came'
to me then, and I hurried to the
owners, for I knew them, and asked
them to take it away. Next day it
was gone and I was glad that I was
honest still. Father, he died, then
mother, too, and the girl,' she married
in a year or two after I left.
S :
fy|v.
> . ;
I am here and will be buried here
in sight of the big Pacific, still I
long for one sight of the old place
away back East, but will never see
it again and hope to meet father and
that mother that saved me to die honest
and hope to meet them across 'he
great divide. Come now, you share
my bed with me," and soon he was
sawing gourds and dreaming of
home perhaps far, far away.

Lightening Burns Barns.
Johnston, June 30.?During a severe
rain and thunder storm here
Wednesday afternoon two large barns
of H. Spann Tonev were struck by
lightning and burned. The barns being
filled with produce, which was
all destroyed. A mule and horse belonging
to Mr. Toney were also killed.
Fletcher Wright lost all his oat
crop, having it in one of Mr. Toney's
barns.
Murders Sister for a Biscuit.
Ella McMaster Is dead, killed by a
shot gun in the hands of her brother,
Henry McMaster, as the result of a
quarrel over a biscuit yesterday morning.
The dead girl was only 10 years
of age while her slayer is just past .
fifteen. The affair occurred on the
plantation of Mr. A. M. Titman about
one and one-half miles north of
Lowryville just across the line in
York county, taking place yesterday
morning about 7:30 o'clock when
breakfast was being eaten. All of the
parties to the shooting are colored.
From information given the Lantern,
it appears that henry McMaster
and his sister, Ella McMaster, were
living with their grandmother, the
wife of Henry Stephens; that yesterday
morning at the breakfast table
the boy and girl got into a dispute
about which one was to have a biscuit
to eat. Each claimed it and
finally the discussion rose to white
heat. To emphasize his argument
Henry McMaster jumped up and
grabbed his shot gun and emptied the
entire contents into his sister's breast, ;
literally blowing her body to pieces ^
ind killing her instantly. '
The affair happened in York county
and it is not known whether the
slayer has been apprehended or not
but it is supposed that he has. A
'phone message was sent to Chester
to be on the lookout for him but he
hasn't appeared in this section.
The exereme youthfulness of both 4
parties coupled yith the deliberate (
result of the shooting is appalling. A i
young girl just 10 years of age shot i
down instantly by her brother is 1
dreadful to think of. \
It is stated that the father of this <
MsMaster boy served a term on the
Chester county chaingang for stealing
something from the store of Mr. i
G. J. Steele at' Lowryville some years
ago, escaping jusf'before his term ex- :
pired and hasn't been heard of for
sometime. His whereabouts at present
are unknown.

lawless traits from his father or shot
his sister in a moment of passion are
questions which will have to be decided
by the jury which tries the case.
The shooting caused much comment
in Lowryville yesterday.
Later?Information received this
morning states that Henry McMaster,
the slayer, has been arrested and
jailed in Yorkville. It is also learned
that the father of this boy was
rearrested and served out his sentence
on the Chester county chaingang.?Chester
