The committee of ladies appointed some time ago to buy a bell for the Methodist church have succeeded in raising sufficient funds, and the bell . ^ was ordered this week. ? i Remember the graded school mass meeting in the court house next Tuesday afternoon at four o'clock. If you are interested in the welfare of our graded school, you will be ^present. It seems to us it would be a good idea if city council would procure the old bell at the Methodist church for a fire alarm bell. The present bell is not of sufficient size to be heard very far. A gentleman in the city who is well posted estimates the population of Bamberg at 2,765. The guesses [ continue to come in, and it will be seen from those published that the figures vary a great deal. >. The Herald office has been very busy the past week printing arguments for the Supreme Court, and as ? consequence we issue only a four page paper this week. Next week we will return to our usual size. Mr. J. F. The amount of money appropriated to the high schools of the State has been published, and it will interest the people of Bamberg to know that the Bamberg school was given $200 extra by reason of making fourteen standard units on its course of study, there being only five other schools in the State making this record, which schools were Johnston. Winnsboro, Dillon. Marion, and Rennettsville. When the number of high schools in the'State is taken into account, the record of the Bamberg school is all the more remarkable, and the faculty and trustees are to be congratulated on the fine showing made. The members are earnestly urged to attend as important business is to be attended to, and also asked to bring dues. United Daughters Confederacy. A committee of ladies met at the home of Mrs. J. D. Copeland Monday afternoon to look at designs for a' Confederate monument to be erected by the chapter. This matter will be taken up at the next meeting of the chapter and plans for raising funds discussed. Let every one take an interest to this work and see that we have a monument worthy of the brave men who dedicated their lives to the cause. MAY C. McCUB. Bamberg Democratic Club. Last Friday morning about on< o'clock the house of Hey wood John son, the colored harness maker, was burned. The dwelling was situatec on Bridge street, opposite the colorec Baptist church. The fire had sucl headway when, discovered that th< occupants had little time to get oui of the burning building, and prac tically none of the furniture wat saved. It is not known how the fir( originated. There was $500 insur ance on the building and $100 or furniture. Widow Sues "King" Sellers. Columbia, April 25.?A case that is expected to come up here soon in tb< court of common pleas is a $25,00( suit, brought by the widow of Con stable J. P. Farmer, who was killec in 1 907 by Wade Hampton Sellers who was called "king of blii^d tig ers." Sellers was acquitted on ; technicality of law, but the widow if suing him for $25,000 damages. TEACHERS' EXAMINATION The regular examination of applicants for teachers' certificates will be held at the court house on Friday May 6th, 1910, beginning at 9 o'clock a. m.
