TO HOLD GOOD ROADS MEETING
Members of State Association tc
Gather in Colombia.
Columbia, January 2.?The South
Carolina Good Roads Association will
meet in Columbia on January 18. A
letter has been addressed by F. H.
Hyatt, president of the Association,
to the county supervisors of the State,
urging their attendance, also the appointment
of a number of delegates
from each county. A most successful
meeting is expected.
Within the past year, and since
tfce last meeting of the Association
there has been more good roads talk
in the State than in any previous period.
A number of good roads meetings
have been held and there seems
to be a spirit in all sections of the
State in favor of better highways.
A great deal of publicity has been
given to the good roads movement in
this State. There has been much
written and said, yet nothing of a
material nature has been accomplished
on a big scale, although reports
from the various counties show that
the roads have been improved to
some extent. There have been no
long stretches of road constructed or
bond issues, every county turning the
proposition down when presented.
A highway engineer will be recommended
by Commissioner Watson in
his annual report to the legislature.
This engineer would be at the disposal
of all the counties. He. would
make all plans, surveys and specifications
and place the supervisors In
a position to go ahead with the work
of construction. At the present time,
when an engineer Is needed for good
roads work, some time has to be
spent in taking up the matter with
the Federal Government and then it
is several months before a man is
available. With a State highway engineer,
the expert would be ready at
all times to answer any call to any
parts of the State.
Little Girl Dies of Burns. "
Greenwood, Dec. 29.?A little 7year-old
child, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Jim Rykard, who live two miles
West of Hodges, was burned so badly
last Saturday that she afterwards
died. The family were moving out

which had Just been built. While
around a fire in one of the rooms
of the new house the little girl's dress
caught fire. She ran and her clothing
was soon burned off. Death resulted.
