Rock Hill, Nov. 18.?A petition V-. was filed here this morning before C. W. F. Spencer, Esq., United States referee in bankruptcy, adjudging Shannon & Hope, who have been con-. ducting a big general mercantile business at Sharon, bankrupts. Your correspondent is informed that they sold several hundred bales of cotton in the spring for fall delivery which they had bought on contract from their customers, and when the time came for the customers to bring it in some of the latter refused to do so / hoomiBo thfi nrespnt market nrices were so much higher than at what > they had bargained it to the above firm, and on this account the firm lost several thousand dollars. They gave their liabilities at $35,000 and assets at $20,000. ; V Explaining an Excuse. ... An Atlanta merchant has frequent occasion to rebuke Ike, his darky porter, for his tardiness in reporting ? for duty in the morning. Ike is always ready with a more or less ingenious excuse. "You're two hours late, Ike!" exclaimed the employer one morning. "This sort of thing must stop! Otherwise I am going to fire you. Understand!" "Deed, Mistah Edward," replied Ike, "it wa'nt mah fault dis time! Hones'! I was kicked by a mule!" "Kicked by a mule? Well, even if * that were so, it wouldn't delay you for more than an hour. You'll have thltilr r?f a better excuse than that" Ike looked aggrieved. "Mistah Edward," he continued, solemnly, "it might have been all right ef dat mule kicked me in dis direction; but he didn't?he kicked me de odder way."?Atlanta Journal. Deafness Cannot be Cored hy local application, as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the eustachian tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever; nine cases out of ten are caused by catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous surfaces. We will give one hundred dollars for any case of deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars free. P. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. Floridians Unlikely to Deal Gently With Aiken Man's Slayer. Aiken, November 19.?A good deal of interest is manifested here in the arrest in Charleston of Ed Semmes, the negro who cut to death Mr. M. S. Redd, of this county, in Mulberry, Fla. The murder of Mr. Redd is described as one of the foulest that had ever occurred in that section of Florida. Mr. Redd was overseer of a gang of hands in Mulberry. Two negroes, one of whom was Semmes, are said to have become enraged because of Mr. Redd's refusal to do something asked of him, and they are alleged to have plotted to take his life Thev waited in ambush until Mr. Redd passed going home, and one of them grabbed him and held him while the other, Semmes, cut him with a knife. So outraged were the people of that section that when one of the negroes was captured they strung him up to a convenient tree, and Semmes would have met with a similar fate if he had been captured. A reward of $500 is out for Semmes' arrest. It is believed that if he is carried back to Mulberry he will share the fate of his fellow-murderer. Mr. Redd was the son of Mr. M. C. Redd, one of this county's famous citizens. Dying Man Left Note. Franklin, Pa., November 21.? "Accidental, slipped and " was the contents of a note found tonight i in a dense thicket besides the body of I. B. Borland, aged 50 years, former county treasurer and a prominent politician, who has been missing from home since Friday. A wound in the left leg caused Borland to bleed to death, according to the coroner. The accident was the result of a hunting trip. It was evident that Borland began to write the note, but fell exhausted before he could finish it. A Good Ending. Peacefully all the dispensaries in this countv closed out their stocks ahead of schedule. Not a drop remained on hand. The County Board of Control has to its credit about $35,000. When all liabilities are paid the net "profits remaining for division between the county schools and towns will be $29,000. There has been no scandal whatever connected with the conduct of the business and all connected with it have made honest, honorable, efficient records.?Barnwell People. Coke D. Mann, of Oconee county, has caught the missionary fever or is in danger of falling from grace is a question. For 25 years he has been a Methodist preacher and under his ministry 2,000 converts have been added to its membership. He has served a couple of terms in the Legislature.
