Sir- James Crichton-Browne, presi-j
dent of a recently formed interna- j
tional union of scientific organizations
working together for the extermination
of rats, declared that
every rat in the United States costs
the citizens at least two cents a day
for its keep. In England a rat costs!
from half a cent to five cents daily.
The British India rat is the most expensive
rodent of them all, or there
each of the innumerable swarming
millions of the pests consumes j
on an average of three cents daily.
If you add to the cost of the board
and lodgings of rats the expenses of
maintaining quarantine operations
against them and of fighting the diseases
spread hy them, the average
specimen of the rodent tribe preying
on civilized nations may be said to
cost us from seven to ten cents a

In a strange Land.
Two belated disciples of Bacchus

The other seriously contradicted
aim, saying: "That ain't monsh,

This started an argument, which *
lasted for several minutes, as to
whether the globe was the moon or "
the sun. Finally they decided to
ieave it to the first passerby, who i
happened to be another "happy" f
gentleman. They stopped him, and, r
pointing to the globe, asked: J'
"Settle an argument, old pal; is c
that the moon or the sun?" t
The third party stared knowingly
at the globe for several minutes before
he shook his head and replied: ?
"Gentlemen, I really couldn't tell 1
you. I'm a stranger in this town."

tells of an amusing case he once i

Sutton was puzzled by the term. !
Counsel explained that the expres-1
sion meant a certainty, money paid ;
not for odd jobs, but for steady em- j

sation at stated intervals on which j
one could absolutely rely. I
Upon the conclusion of counsel's
remarks, the darky's face brighten-.'
ed.
"I think I has a fixed income, j
sah," said he.
"And what is this fixed income?"!
was the next question.
"Well, sah." answered Dick, with !
