?Mr. F. E. Copeland, ol! the Ehrhardt
section, one of The Herald's
good friends, was in the city last
Friday and called to see us.
?Mr. J. D. Copeland went up to
Norfolk, Va., this week on a visit to
his son, Ensign D. Graham Copeland,
who has just returned from a foreign
cruise of several months.
CARTER LODGED IN JAIL.
Slayer of J. A. Reed, at Norway, in
Orangeburg, Surrenders.

Carter, who shot and killed Jas. A. |
fteed, near Norway yesterday, has
surrendered to Sheriff Salley and is
now in jail here.
The coroner held an inquest over
the body of Reed to-day, and the
jury returned a verdict charging
Carter with the killing, and also
charging Henry S. Spires, Carter's
father-in-law, with being accessory.
Spires was present when the difficulty
occurred, and is said to have
toaHp no pffort to keeD the men
apart.
It is said that the first shot was
fired by Reed, who had warned Carter
not to put his hand upon certain
wire which Reed had strung to mark
a line between lands of the two,
which was in dispute, and when Carter
did so, presumably to remove the
"line wire," he was shot at by Reed.
Thi3 first shot, Carter says, grazed
his skull, passing through his hat.
Carter then closed in on Reed, drawing
his pistol at the same time, and
both fired other shots, Reed being fatally
injured, dying yesterday afternoon.
No papers have as yet been
filed with the sheriff, and he is therefore
holding Carter because of the
voluntary surrender of the latter.
Carter is quite a young man, and
Reed was about fifty years of age.
District Meeting.

it was. The delegates from Bamberg
lodge who attended were: L. B.
Fowler, C. B. Free, Jr., and Norman
Kirsch. H. E. Gyles, of Aiken, was
elected district deputy. The next
meeting of the district lodge is to be
held at Barnwell. The long form
Knight rank was conferred Tuesday
night by a degree team from Aikei
I lodge, after which a banquet was
served to the visiting brethren.
Militia May be Called Out.
Lincoln, Neb., Feb. 21.?Late tonight
the police department of South
Omaha was in communication with
Gov. Shallenberger, who was notified
of the excitement of the rioting and
his advice asked.
Gov. Shallenberger said if it seemjed
necessary he would call out the
State militia company at Omaha and
; would himself go to the packing town
if deemed advisable. He also notified
Adjt. Gen. Harlington to hold himself
in readiness for service.
