Doing Fine Work.
Mr. L. L. Chartrand, the contractor,
who has done considerable work in
Bamberg, is now at North, where he
bas done considerable building for
parties in that town. He is now putting
the finishing touches on the large
handsome two-story building for
Mrs. A. C. Tyler. This building cov
srs 4,260 square ieei ui giuuuu, uao
two stores on the ground floor, with
a twelve-room hotel with all modern
improvements on the second floor.
Mr. Chartrand has also put down
4,620 square yards of cement side
walks in the town of North. He is
also erecting a handsome two-story
residence for Miss Leila Livingston,
which he will soon finish. As these
contracts are about wound up, he is
aow ready to figure with anybody
who wants building done in Bamberg
or elsewhere, and will make you
plans and specifications for either
brick or wooden buildings, stores or
residences, and will estimate on your
work as cheap as reliable work can
be done. If you want estimates on .
any kind of work, write him at North
or St. Matthews. <
The election on the question of
forming Edisto county out of portions
of Orangeburg, Aiken, and Lexington
is to be held on Tuesday, December
15th. It is likely that the
aew county will be defeated, as both
the towns of Perry and Wagener
want to be the county seat. ]
Court Proceedings.
When we went to press last week
the case of S. G. Mayfield against the
Southern Railway was being tried,
rhis was a suit for damages for the
burning of a ginnery, it being claimed
by the plaintiff that the building
a?as hv suarks from a locomotive.
The jury could not agree, and the
judge ordered a mistrial.
The case of Bailey Bros, against
j. B. Kearse resulted in a verdict for
plaintiff for $106.77.
W. P. Blume had a suit against the
Southern Railway for closing up a
street where the freight depot now
stands, thereby giving him no means
)f getting out from his house, he
living above the freight warehouse.
The railroad contended that the land
vas theirs and they had a right to
Mose up the street. The jury gave
Mr. Blume $1,200 damage?. Motion
:or a new trial was made and refused,
ind the case will be appealed to the
State Supreme Court.
The case of S. G. Mayfield against
:he Southern Railway Co., for damige

$995.00. This load of stock was
shipped from Alabama to Denmark,
ind the horses were bruised up badly,
some being killed.
In the case of Jones A. Williams
igainst J. S. and J. P. Jennings, the
jury returned a verdict for plaintiff
for $1,013.10.

For several adequate reasons, the

HON' JOS. G. CAMP COMING
liie People of Bamberg to Have the
Opportunity of Hearing This
Noted and Brilliant Speaker.
The local lyceum management has
completed arrangements to have Hon.
Jos. G. Camp, of Georgia, here for a
lecture date December 5th.
Mr. Camp has been doing lyceum
work only six years. During that
time he has delivered nearly 1,000
lectures, and has appeared as many
as four times at the same place during
these six years.
He comes endorsed by the leading
men of his State; Ex-Governor Northern
Senator Clay, Ex-Governor Atkinson,
Senator Bacon, Gen John B.
Gordon, Hon Clark Howell, and Dr.
J. B. Hawthorne. The South has no
higher authority, and we ought to
count ourselves fortunate in having
such a man come to us.
In a private letter to the local manager
the president of the lyceum system
said: "He is one of our most
popular lecturers, and we are sure
that all who hear him will be thoroughly
delighted. His lecture on
'Truth and Shams' is a gem, and
ought to be heard by every communJ?
"\T7 ^ I. VVM11 will V? o tra Q 1 o vara
! L>. VV e uupc JUU will uait o
audience to hear him on this occasion."
The editor of the Ch-cagoan says:
"The lecture of Prof. J G. Camp was
by all odds the most eloquent speech
it has ever been my pleasure to hear.
I doubt if it can be excelled by any
orator of the present day. For noble
Bentiment, for intense patriotism and
morality, for entrancing beauty of
word painting, and for genuine, enthusiastic
eloquence, Prof. Camp's
'Truths and Shams' must stand unexcelled.
By all means let the people
hear it and profit by it."
Every man, woman and child in
Bamberg ought to hear this great
leeture, and with a view to encouraging
this the management has reduced
the price to 35 cents.
Let's give Mr. Camp a full house.
