Colored Methodist Church.
V The colored Methodists of Bainberg
are preparing to build a new
j? \ church, and last Sunday they raised
in cash $543 for the project. This
f v is a remarkable record, and we doubt
if few white congregations in this
f section would do so well on one Sunday.
This amount was paid in cash,
'no promises about it. They are get1
.f ting on very nicely in the matter of
securing subscriptions for the new
building, and it will not be many
* months before they will start work
on a handsome church. It is their in I
tention to build a church costing $6,^
000 or $7,000.

Letter from China.
We had the pleasure a few days
igo of reading a letter from Midshipman
D. Graham Copeland to his father,
Mr. J. D. Copeland. The letter
was dated September 3rd, at Kian?an,
China. Mr. Copeland was then
on the Callao, but he wrote that he
would be transferred that afternoon
temporarily to the Helena. In a few
weeks he was to join the fleet at Manilla,
but before going he will take
ei week's leave to Soo Chow and other
resorts.
Mr. CoDeland tells of a pleasant
visit to Admiral Sah, of the Chinese
navy, whose guest he was at tiffin.
The Admiral has a son at Purdue
University, in Indiana. Admiral Sah
is one of the leading officers in the
Chinese navy, and will have entire
charge of the entertainment of the
American battleship fleet when it
reaches Amoy, China. This entertainment
is to be a large affair, a great
sum of money having been appropriated
by the Chinese government for
the entertainment of the enlisted
men as well as the officers, the total ,
appropriation reaching nearly half a
million dollars. One item is to be
a gold medal for each American officer
and a silver medal for every .
seaman. So it seems that the Chinese
think right well of Americans
after all.
Mr. Copeland says that the climate
was very pleasant at the date of his
letter, as the latitude there is the
same as Savannah, and a fine sea
breeze all the time was an added advantage.
He has been well pleased
with the ships to which he has been
assigned, each assignment being on
a good ship. He has finished up his
examinations for the rank of Ensign,
and his commission will date
from the 12th of September. This
wil be pleasant news to his many
friends at home.
Mr. Copeland says, some nice
things about The Herald in his letter,
which we appreciate very much.
He asks his father to discontinue
sending the News and Courier, as
The Herald gives him all the home
news, and that it is about all he cares
about any way. He says: "I look
forward to The Herald very anxiously.
and think that it is a very nicely
?pprtainlv eives all
guneui uy ^ ? _
the home news, and a very good resume
of the State news."
Mr. Salley Resigns.
Mr. Jas. E. Salley, who has been
superintendent of the electric light
plant at this place since it was built,
has resigned, to take effect three
months from now or sooner if the
board of public works can fill his!
place. Mr. Salley goes back to J
Orangeburg. He was superintendent!
of the water and light plant at that
place before coming to Bamberg, and
! he goes back at a substantial increase
in salary. The board regretted
very much to give Mr. Salley up,
but the plant here is not large
enough nor has enough customers to
| warrant paying him what a water
j and light plant combined could pay.
