AS TO "LAND GREED."
The Walterboro newspapers appear
to be somewhat exercised over our
V
paragraph in reference to the citizens
of Warren and Broxton townships
wanting to vote themselves into Bamberg
county, and seem very much
, surprised that they had not heard of
it. The Colletop News need not be
surprised that the voters of these
x townships have failed to consult its
editor and get his permission to "agttfitp"
the matter, for he has not been)
^ ;in the county long enough to become
m citizen. Even if he had been, it is
j? s not likely that he would have been
consulted. But the matter is being
. "agitated" by the people of the townvi
. 7 ships named, and the movement did
V not originate in Bamberg. Whether
It amounts to anything or not, or
j|\ ; will be carried forward to the point
s - of holding an election, we are not
prepared to say, but we have heard
Jfe the matter talked of for some
Jp. months. It is not land greed on our
part, neighbor. Don't be in such a
hurry to attribute such things to us.
Those people will better their con?
~ ' dition by coming into Bamberg. We
/ are willing to compare records with
F|"> Colleton, along any line, "natural resources"
or otherwise. We believe
Bamberg has better roads, better'
schools, and a lower tax rate than'
i,-.. Colleton, and it is not surprising that!
Jpeople from other counties want to
.. come within our borders.
ph^ ' But don't worry yourself. When
-> ..?. the people of that section get ready
H? to take any action in the matter they
will not tax your brain with askingl
| advice or suggestions as to what they
must or must not do, and again we
say if they want to come into Bamberg
they will be cordially welcomed.
CIVIC ASSOCIATION.
; , We are very much gratified that
f. the ladies of Bamberg have organized
5.' . a civic association. There is much
^ y work for them to do, and we pledge!
- them the hearty support of this newspaper
in their efforts for a clean and
i": beautiful city. There are a number
6f suggestions we might make to
v: them hs to work to take up, and, if
they will pardon us, one of the first
*-V- things they should look after is the
habit of merchants sweeping the
paper and trash from their stores out
on Main street, there to be blown
about by the wind and scattered until
taken up by the town carts. It is
jnst as easy to put this trash in a
barrel or box, and it would improve
appearances very much. But we did
, not start out to offer [suggestions.
We only want to assure the association
of our hearty support and en;:K
couragement in their good work. No
movement of recent years has meant
E . so much for the town, an(} while
there are difficulties ahead, we feel
sure the association will accomplish
much good. The ladies have organized
with earnestness and enthusiasm,
and we feel assured that this spirit,
is not temporary.
Is This True?
"We understand that the people
of Warren and Broxton townships in
Colleton county are agitating the
matter of voting themselves into
Bamberg county. While we do not
care to be put in the position of trying
to make people in other counties
dissatisfied, still if they want to come
they will be welcomed. We understand
there is a movement in Blackville
township, in Barnwell county,
to come into Bamberg also. Bamberg
county will be glad to have all these
people should they care to come, and
we believe it will be to their interest
to do so.?Bamberg Herald."
The above comes as quite a surprise
to us?we have heard absolutely
nothing of any "agitation" on
the part of any one to go to Bamberg
county. We trust this is only one of
brother Knight's dreams of what he
would like to see. Of course the people
of Warren and Broxton townships
do not wish any such thing.
They are at present mighty well
pleased with Colleton. Bamberg
courttv would beyond doubt, be glad
toNhave these townships, but it will
not just the same.?Walterboro
Press and Standard.
HOMICIDE IX ANDERSON.
Wiley Mcintosh, Colored, Shot and
Killed by Eulace Belcher.
Anderson, Oct. 7.?Anderson conn- 1
ty added another homicide to her list '
when Wiley Mcintosh, colored, was
shot and killed by Eulace Belcher at
Barnes station. Belcher has been ar- '
rested and lodged in the county jail.
According to Mcintosh's dying statement.
the shooting was premeditated.
He is quoted as saying that Belcher
owed him 25 cents and that he promised
to pay it to him provided he
(Mcintosh) would call at Belcher's
house for it. Belcher picked a quarrel
with Mcintosh when the latter :
arrived to collect the money. The
quarrel was concerning Belcher's
wife. Belcher commenced the firing,
so it is said, and while attempting-to
run away Mcintosh was hit by a bul- 1
let, which caused his death.
Belcher tells a different story. He ;
says that he heard a noise under his
house and that when he went out to
investigate it some one began shiot- ;
ing at him from under the house.
He said he returned the fire and hit i
Mcintosh. Belcher said that Mcln- :
tosh was running when he shot him, ]
hence the bullet wounds in the ne- :
gro's back. Belcher made no attempt i
to escape and did not resist arrest. i
SLAIN BY WOMAN. 1
Capt. J. Clayton Erb's Sister-in-Law
Admits She Did the Shooting. ,
Philadelphia, Oct. 7.?The killing J
at his country home near here last j
night of Capt. J. Clayton Erb, trusted
lieutenant and confidential man
of Israel W. Durham, former leader .
of the local Republican organization,
has caused a sensation. Capt. Erb J
was shot dead by his sister-in-law, j
Mrs. Katherine Beisel, during a quarrel
over domestic affairs. He was .
extremely well known in all walks ;
of life in this city and had many
friends throughout the State.
While Mrs. Beisel has admitted ,
the killing, she has thus far failed
to supply certain details of the trag- .
edy.
According to Mrs. Beisel, she
heard an exchange of angry words
on the second floor and, on going upstairs
found Erb beating his wife, j
According to her story, as related
to the officials, Erb turned from his
wife and started to attack her and,
fearing for her life, she pointed a revolver
at him and fired. She emptied
every bullet of the chamber into ]
Erb's body and he staggered and fell (
in his tracks.
Eugene Poulson, a colored coach- J
man, recently indicted at the in- ,
stance of Mrs. Erb for threatened as- ,
sault. was the first to spread the ,
alarm when the shooting was diseov- (
ered. According to his story he was ,
sleeping in the coachman's house ]
when Mrs. Beisel aroused him by
crying out: "Capt. Erb has been
shot." Poulson ran to a nearby village
and at midnight aroused the officials
and hurried them'back to the 5
scene of the tragedy.
"Clayt" Erb, as he was familiarly !
known, had been a prominent figure 1
in Republican political affairs of this 1
county and state since the ascendency !
of his friend, Durham. j
Just Land Greed.
And now comes the Bamberg Herald
with the statement that a part of
Colleton county wants to move. J
Above all that it wants to get into <
Bamberg county. Just to keep the 1
record straight this is what the Her- <
aid says: ]
"We understand that the people of
Warren and Broxton townships in i
Colleton county are agitating the ;
matter of voting themselves into '
Bamberg county. While we do not <
care to be put in the position of try- :
ing to make people in other counties
dissatisfied, still if they want to come
with us they will be welcomed. We
understand there is a movement on
foot for Blackville township, in Barnwell
county, to come into Bamberg also.
Bamberg county will be glad to
have all these people should they care
to come, and we believe it will be to
their interest to do so."
Now, Neigbhor Knight ma}' be
working a joke or leading up to a
boom issue, but he's certainly serving
cold dope when he passes out
this dose. Some fellow may have
casually remarked that Bamberg is
a mighty good county?and it is?
but this is the first information The
News has had that anybody preferred
Bamberg to Colleton county; any of
the folks living in Colleton.
As good as Bamberg is we are just
a little better as a county, and we
are very shortly going to be better
than that. In fact, with all the development
work just opening up in
this county, and the possession of
natural resources all over the county
which Bamberg could never hope to
lay claim to, who would want to
make such a move?
No, old fellow, you simply got the
left shoe on the right foot. No portion
of Colleton county has the
slightest reason to want to become a
part of Bamberg; but Bamberg has
every reason to want a part of Colle
ton?which she can't get.
And say, neighbor, we are pretty |
busy right now, and jokes are out j
of season.?Colleton News.
JEALOUS MAX USES AX AXE. j
His Wife, Brother-in-La\v and letter's
Wife his Victims.
Bristol. Tenn., Oct. 4.?A special
from Johnson City says:
L. A. Bayless. a magistrate, early
to-day attacked his brother-in-law,
Berney Bayless. while the latter was
asleep in bed at his home and almost
literally chopped his head off with an
axe. He then attacked Bayless's wife
fatally wounding her. Turning the
weapon upon his own wife, who was
in the house he struck her several
blows and inflicting probably fatal
injuries. Bayless was arrested and
half an hour later was found dead in
his cell, having hanged himself.
Jealously is said to have been the
cause of Bayless's attack.

t
New City Hall. J.
City council is discussing the pro-J
position of erecting a new building
to replace the one destroyed by fire, i
It is likely that Bamberg will have a
sky scraper, as it is the plan of council
to erect a three-story building if
possible. They wish to erect a building
3">xl00 feet, with a handsome
store on the first floor. On the second {
floor will be a larger hall for public i
tainments. etc., and the third floor '
will be a lodge room' for the (
Masons and Knights of Py- |
thias. this hall to be used exclusively
for a lodge room. It will (
be fitted up handsomely, and will have
a reading room, all necessary
ante rooms, regalia closets, and a i
large lodge room. Council and re- /
presentatives of the lodges are conferring
together, and it may be that;(
the lodges will build the third story /
and own it, as council has not the
money in its treasury to erect the I
entire building. The Knights of |
Pythias lodge has about $1,000 on
hand and the Masons several hun- \
dred, so they could easily borrow any |
balance needed. It is their idea to .
fit up the hall with handsome fur- (
niture, chrpet, etc., in other words to |
make as nice lodge room as there is .
in the State, and it is also proposed *
to make the building one of the handsomest
in town. It is a good idea,
and we hope to see the three-story
building erected.

ing the matter, he decided to accept (
the call and will enter upon the dis- j

final details were agreed upon.?

Df the Lutheran churches composing :
the Johnston pastorate, and will take

Mr. Monroe is pastor of Ehrhardt and

C
Never neglect your kidneys.
If you have pain in the back, urinary
disorders, dizziness a!hd nervousness,
it's time to act and no time
to experiment. These are all symptoms
of kidney trouble, and you
should seek a remedy which is
known to cure the kidneys.
Doan's Kidney Pills is the remedy '
to use. No need to experiment. It '
has cured many stubborn cases in
Bamberg. Follow the advice of a
Bamberg citizen and be cured yourself.
'
J. C. Utsey, Main St., Bamberg, S.
C., says: . "I am very willing that
my name should be used in recommendation
of such a valuable remedy
as Doan's Kidney Pills. I suffered
to quite an extent from kidney
trouble for several years. There were
pains in the small of my back,
through the loins and at times I was
bothered by the irregular action of
the kidneys. The use of several rem- ;
edies brought me but little relief and
when I saw Doan's Kidney Pills advertised,
I went to the People's- drug
store and procured a supply. Although
I have not taken them long
enough to justify a cure, from the
results already received. I feel that
it * will be but a short time before
this result is brought about. T hope
that others who are afflicted in a
similar manner will give Doan's Kidney
