Mr. J. B. Padgett, of Smoaks, died
last Saturday afternoon after a brief :

The receipts of cotton at this mar- <
ket continue to be heavy. The high j
prices paid by our merchants, and
the fact that several large export <
buyers have representatives here, induces
many farmers to haul the cot- i
ton from a distance, for they know
they will obtain the highest prices. 1

was 9 *4 cents the pound.

North Dakota has a pure paint law.
Prof, Ladd, the state chemist analyzes
a certain paint labled "contains
only lead and zinc and is strictly
pure," and finds it no lead at all,
a resinous oil, and benzine. It is
however, full-measure and contains
no water.
That's like the man on trial for
killing his grandmother; proved that
he didn't set fire to the house.
No lead, but zinc and barytes, resinous
oil, and benzine?"strictly pure
lead and zinc paint!"
Pure paint is lead-zinc-and-oil;
but that isn't all; there is such a
thing as proportion and make. The
strongest paini is uevoe.
North Dakota is doing a handsome
thing in holding these confidence-people
up to scorn. She gives
their names as well as their works.

Orphan Work-Day.
There is a family of 250 orphan
children at the Epworth Orphanage,
Columbia, S. C., Methodist.
There are 250 orphans at the Connie
Maxwell Orphanage, Greenwood,
S. C., Baptist.
There are 250 orphans at the
Thornwell Orphanage, Clinton, S. C.,
Presbyterian.
Th re are 50 orphans at the Church
Home, Charleston, S. C., Episcopalian.
The Lutheran Church Home is at
Salem, Va.
The Hewbrew Home is at Atlanta,
Ga.
The Roman Catholic Homes are in
Charleston, S. C.
The support and care of all these
various denominational institutions,
**ith their large body of fatherless
children, is a sufficient appeal to evsry
heart.
Some years ago it was suggested
by Rev. Howard Crumley, Atlanta,
Ga., that on the first Saturday and
Sabbath of October, all those who
love children set apart those days
for gathering funds to relieve the
needs of the fatherless. On that
Saturday, let everybody old and
roung, rich and poor, devote the day
;o the orphanages, each man sending
tiis gift to the orphanage he loves
;he best or that lies nearest his heart.
The Georgia scheme worked well.
For several years an effort has been
made to rouse an* equal interest in
South Carolina, and Alabama and
Florida have also taken it up. In
every community some zealous brother
might take up the matter and
push it and the day's work from everybody
would go to the orphans.
This proposition is not in the interest
of any orphanage; it is intended
for each one to give to the orphanige
nearest his heart. Give Saturday's
wages to the orphans. Gather
the proceeds on the Sabbath and forward
to the institutions above named.
It will be sure to reach the right
spot, if drafts and checks are made
eut to the name of the institution itself
and provisions shipped to the
same. We have no doubt that when
in individual community makes
special request of the railway authorities,
flour and rice and molasses or
my other products would find them
willing to deliver without charge.
Notice that this is simply a statement.
Urgent appeals are not necessary.
The orphans need help. The
Institutions are unable to give it,
without the backing of the people.
A.t this season all their treasuries are
greatly depleted. Do not overlook
Che day.
