Mwh Pooling Grows Out of Killing
of White Man by NVgro.
Aiken. July T.?Last night Sheriff
Raborn received a message from
Wagener asking that he come at once
to that point, as trouble was brewing.
The sheriff went to Wagener
! in an automobile as soon as possible.
I and found that the cause of the
! trouble was the shooting of Policeman
Henry Salley, of Salley. by
George Moore, a negro. It has been
learned that posses are after the negro.
and if he is captured a lynching
may result. Up to this time he has
not been captured, but it is said that
he is being diligently searched for
by friends of Salley and the officers.
Prom the stories told by parties
in the city from that section to-day
it appears that Salley and- a man
named Poole had been in Wagener
Saturday, and when they were on
tftClT way nome Ileal' W ae;*riiTri uroj
whipped a negro, and further on they
struck up with a brother of Moore,
whom they alleged owed one of them
a nickel, ft' is stated that they
struck him and afterwards fired their
pistols at him. FTe ran home and
the men came on toward Perry.
MOote's house is on the road. When
they reached if they got put of the
buggy and threatened the negro.
When they were advancrng toward
the house George Moore stepped out
with a' shofguh and fired at them,
most of the load striking Salley in
the thigh and hip, and one or two
shots striking Poole: Salley fell and?
the degrO struck Mm twice with the
gun. SaHey then got up and the- negf
'o got out of the way. Pool'e, it is
said, went away, leaving Salley when1
the shot was fired.
sariey^ wounds were dressed, and
it is not thought that he is seriously
; hurt. ft appears that there is a
great difference in opinion upon the
affair, many being in sympathy with'
the negro, alleging that the' two menwere
under the influence of lienor.
At the same; time others appear to
be infuriated about the matter and
have a great deal of feeling against
the man. The sheriff was unable to
locate the negro: He returned to;
the city late this afternoon. Talk of
