The railroad has had an office built
in the freight depot, and a clerk is
now on duty there. This is a much
better arrangement, as the passenger
depot office was too crowded for the
freight business.

An interesting meeting of Bamberg
lodge, Knights of Pythias, was
held last Monday evening. The rank
of Esquire was given Mr. R. M.
Bruce, and the rank of Page was
conferred on Messrs. F. B. McCracken
and C. H. Mitchell.

The entertainment by the Loyal
Temperance Legion at the Fitting
School chapel Monday evening bids
fair to attract a large audience. The
price of admission is low: 15c. for
adults and 10c. for children. Proceeds
for a good cause.

progress at the mill chapel. The
preaching is being done by Mr. Yarborough,
an evangelist. The singing

The people of Bamberg appreciated
the presence of Governor Ansel j
and Grand Master J. L. Michie at the;
exercises of the laying of the corner
stone of the new graded school building.
It was a great pleasure to have
both of these gentlemen with us and
to hear their addresses.

Rev. A. J. Foster, who was pastor
of the Bamberg Baptist church for
two years, but who has had charge of
the church at Allendale for several
months, resigned recently in order to
accept the call of the Winnsboro
church. He and Mrs. Foster left for
Winnsboro last Friday. The best
wishes of their many Bamberg friends j
go with them.
The new building of the Bamberg
graded school looks very much like
the one destroyed by fire on the outside,
but the interior has been dif-'
ferently arranged, and will be much j
more convenient and comfortable.
The building will be heated by steam,
and the work is now being done by
W. B. Guimarin & Co., of Columbia,
they being the lowest bidders.
The base ball team of the Carlisle
Fitting School went to Orangeburg
last Thursday morning to play two
games with the Orangeburg Col-!
legiate Institute. The games were
played Thursday and Friday after- j
noons. The Fitting School boys won j
Thursday's game by a score of 8 to;
6, but the 0. C. I. boys turned the
tables Friday. The score was 6 to j
5. Quite a crowd of the students
went over to witness the games. |

last week.

We learn that Messrs. W. P. Riley

and Barnwell will be held at Aiken
from the 13th to the 31st of July.

Guilty of Manslaughter.
Several from Bamberg attended
court in Orangeburg last week. They
went as witnesses in the case against
the negro detective, B. W. Williams,
who shot and killed the negro preacher
near Branchville a short time ago,
while trying to arrest him. Our readers
are familiar with the case, as we
published a full account at the time.
Williams was defended by J. F. Carter,
Esq., who put up a hard fight and
got him off with a verdict of manslaughter.

of the general assembly, the books of
registration of Bamberg county will be
opened at the county seat on the first
Monday in each month for the enrollment
of all qualified electors, up to the
first Monday in October, 1908, inclusive,
and in addition thereto the books will
be open each day, except Sunday, during
the months of July and August^ 1908,
from 9 a. m. to 6 p. m. No voter will
be re-enrolled who does not make a personal
