All the latest styles and shades. W. D. Rhoad. City council held a special meeting last Thursday afternoon and decided to issue the bonds of $7,000 for water works. The delay has been caused by not obtaining a satisfactory price , f or the bonds, but now the bonds will ' vbe sold and the water works put in. The county board of commissioners and the board of registration will hold meetings at the court house, this being the regular quarterly meeting of the county board of commissioners. C. R. The mijl will run >four days each week. This does away with the day current proposition for the town, as the mill was to run the generator for the day current. Mrs. Murdaugh Entertains. / Last Thursday afternoon Mrs. J. A.. Murdaugh entertained the teachers' fancy work club in her dainty, attractive home on Midway street. After a little music, a bit of work, and a great deal of chat, the hospitable hostess ushered her guests into the dining room where they were served with delightful refreshments. Having spent a most pleasant afternoon, the club adjourned to meet next Thursday with Miss Clara Riley. Sad Death. Heyward Hunter, eldest son of Mr. Geo. W. Hunter, of the Hunter's Chapel section, died yesterday morning from a hurt received at school about six weeks ago while playing base. He was six years old. The burial took place at Hunter's Chapel Baptist church this (Thursday) morning at ten o'clock. The little fellow was coxncu tu uiiancotvii ivi wiv?ir ment, but nothing could be done for him. "When Smith Came Home." This company which pleased the public so highly in this city several weeks ago is booked for a return engagement next Wednesday evening, April 8th, at Folk's opera house. The company is stronger than when it was here, new specialties will be presented, and the company feels sure of giving a better performance all round. Tickets on sale at usual place, and no advance in prices. If you want to enjoy a good wholesome laugh, by all means see "When Smith Came Home." It will make you forget your troubles. \ JTlinstrel Show. A. G. Allen's United Minstrels gave a performance in their canvas theatei at the corner of Fourth and Coun street last night. The tent was pack ed and many were turned away be cause there was no more room. The idea of presenting a minstrel perfor mance under canvas is quite original and judging from the crowd lasi night we judge that it is a paying ven ture. The tent is arranged with stag* scenery and curtains the same as ar opera house. The performance as a whole was meritorious. The sayings and gags were all very good, as well as the choruses, ballads and other singing, The orchestra was also good. In the olio the male electrical dance, the terpsicnorean arust anu pasLimco vj the levee" were amusing, and the riproaring farce presented as a finale was a highly ludicrous and mirth provoking piece of extravagance.?Memphis Commercial Appeal. This company will show in Bamberg Tuesday, April 7th. ? m nr. Lyon at Savannah. Savannah, March 29.? Attorney General J. Fraser Lyon, of South Caroling came to Savannah yesterday for a conference with the Hon. W. W. Osborne and the Hon. Alex Lawrence, who are representing some of the claimants ir the South Carolina dispensary wrangle. The nature of the conference was no1 made public. Referring to the action of Federa Judge Pritchard in taking possession oj the funds appropriated for the use of the Attorney General's office in ferreting out the dispensary trouble, and in placing them in the hands of receivers, Mr Lyon said: "Nothing suits the grafteri better, and the action of the Judge ii thus interfering with the affairs of th< State has so encouraged them and giver them more backbone, that it has injure* our cause greatly. I feel sure the Su preme Court of the United States wil not uphold Judge Pritchard in his inter ference with the dispensary fight." Hessenger Slain, Car Robbed. 4 Newton, Kan., March 29.?Two rob bers early to-day murdered 0. A. Bailey, of Kansas City, an express messengei of the Wells-Fargo Express Company, ir the express car of a west-bound Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe train, betweer Florence and Newton, Kan., robbed botl the local and the through safe, taking a1 least $1,000 and some jewelry, and escaned. ""t The body of Messenger Bailey waj found when the train reached Newton, It was stretched on the floor of the car, lying in a pool of blood. The back oi the skull was crushed and the end of the car in which it was lying was spattered with blood. There was no evidence oi any struggle. The indications are thai the? murder was committed while the messenger was asleep. Bailey was last seen alive at Strong City. At Peabody some one opened the car door just long enough to throw out a package of way bills and then closed it quickly. The custom of Messengei Bailey had been to go to sleep soon aftei leaving Florence, and it is probable thai he did this last night. After slaying the sleeping messenger, the robbers covered the head with a coat, took the safe I keys from the dead man's pockets unc ransacked the safes. Then the keys were returned to Bailey's overcoat and the coat was folded and put in his grip, where it was found later. When the train slowed down at the Missouri Pacific crossing, east of Newton two men were seen by the engineer to jump from the train and run south. The south door of*the express car, was found SW.A*. A reward of $10,000 has befen offered by the Wells-Fargo Express Company for the apprehension of the robbers. Three men were arrested to-night at Wichita on suspicion. No other trace of the robbers Jias been found. The murdered man was about 30 years old. He was only recently married. Letter to J.J. Smoak, Bamberg, S.C.
