The residence of Mr. H. E. Dickinson,
on Midway street, caught fire
< last Sunday about 11:30 o'clock. The
alarm was quickly sounded, a crowd
gathered, and the flames were extinguished
before much damage was
done. The fire was in the roof near
the chimney, catching from a spark. 1

held an interesting meeting last Friday
evening. The Entered Apprentice
degree was conferred upon five
candidates. XA. W. Knight appeared
before the lodge and made a statement
in reference to erecting a lodge
room for the Masons and flights of
Pythias, but the lodge took no action.
Fresh lot chocolate candies just in

The little six-year-old daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. N. J. Thomas, of the
Cope section, died last Thursday of
diptheria. The burial took place at
Oakland cemetery. Two more of
their children have the disease, but
they are getting along nicely and it
is hoped that they will recover. The
bereaved parents have the sympathy
of their many friends in their
trouble.

The financial stringency is not being
felt much in Bamberg so far, but
we suppose it will not be long before <

Notwithstanding the rain, it seemed
a pleasure to the boys and girls as
they strolled away from the old
campus to the pleasant home, where
they were all welcomed by Miss Flossie.
She had some excellent music
played, after which refreshments
were served, and all seemed to enjoy
the time so well that it will always j
be a pleasure for them to recall the
occasion.

PROHIBITION FOR ALABAMA.
State Senate Adopts Anti-Whiskey

Montgomery, Ala., Nov. 19.?
Unprecedented scenes were enacted
in the senate chamber of the historic
capitol of Alabama today, when the
statutory prohibition bill was passed.
The vote was 32 to 2, Spragins and
Hamer being the only members to
vote against it. The law becomes
operative Januai^ 1st, 1909, an
amendment to this effect having been
adopted, with but one dissenting
vote, before the roll on the passage
of the bill was called.
When two carloads of Mobile women
came to the city today, to lobby
against the bill they found the delegations
from Montgomery, Selma
and Birmingham, who favored
the prohibition measure had filled
the senate galleries until not a seat
was left.
Women and children thronged the
corridors and gallery, and even
usurped the floor itself, pushing the
senators from their seats, and giving
vent to their enthusiasm by shouts
and cheers that echoed and re-echoed
through the building. Senators who
opposed the bill were hissed down
when they arose to speak against the
measure, and Lieut.-Gov. Gray, the
presiding officer of the senate, was
forced to reprove the spectators.
The bill was in the nature of a
compromise between the Antis and
the Prohibitionists. The Antis, seeing
they were in the minority, agreed
to give up the fight provided the
time was extended to January 1st,
1909, when the sale of whiskey will
be forbidden in the State of Alabama.
This amendment will be sent to the
house and will be concurred in without
a fight.
Governor Comer will approve the
bill and it is understood that a movement
already has been started by the
W. C. T. TJ. to make a signing of the
bill a very formal occasion.

some rainy weather now. It rained
right hard this morning, but not too
hard for us to go to school. We had
nine scholars.
Misses Beulah and Irene Beard,
Nell Clayton, and Mr. John Clayton
visited Mr. and Mrs. Barnie Bishop
at Ehrhardt Saturday and Sunday
and had a very pleasant time.
Mrs. Lillie Owens and Miss Elliott
Beard, of Spartanburg; sister of Mr.
Thomas Beard, visited the home of
Mrs. Ogreta and Mr. Thos. Beard
last week. *
Mrs. Martha Brabham, of the
Buford's Bridge section, sister of
Mr. Thos. Beard, visited this community

There will be Thanksgiving services
at the Colston Baptist church on the
28th of November. The public is
cordially invited to come with well
filled baskets, as we are going to
spend the day, and have dinner on
the grounds.

HONEYMOON MARRED BY KILLING.
Q. E. Sampson, of West Virginia, Accidentally
Shoots His Guide.
Anderson, Nov. 18.?A most distressing
accidental killing occurred
mi Mr. Allen Martin's place near (his
rity, when Mr. George E. Sampson,
a visitor from Hinton, W. Va., shot
and killed Ernest Snipes, a colored
nan of 30 years. Mr. Sampson is a
nephew of Mrs. William Sheib of
>f this city. He was married in West
Virginia several days ago and is here
vith his bride spending part of his
aoneymoon. Being fond of hunting
ae and Master William Sheib went
)ut to shoot some quail and Ernest
Snipes agreed to go along to help locate
the birds. When the dogs found
i covey of birds Messrs. Sampson and
Sheib got in position to shoot when
Snipes flushed them. Snipes walked
n front of Mr. Sampson's gun and it
vent off. The trigger had hit against
Mr. Sampspn'sknee. The darkey was
>nly about three feet from the
nuzzle of the gun and all of the shot I
X)ok effect in his left leg above the
cnee.. Mr. Sampson had a pair of
flamps in his pocket and he placed
these around the negro's leg to stop
the flow of blood, but it could not be

stopped. Mr. Sampson tnen put tne
negro in his new overcoat and carried
,iim to the negro's home, only a short
iistance away. Before medical attention
could be secured the darkey
bled to death. Mr. Sampson is terribly
distressed over the accident and
the incident has completely marred
the pleasure of his bridal trip. He
bas done everything possible for the
svife of the dead negro and has paid
the burial expenses.
An inquest was held by Coroner
Pruitt -and the jury returned a
verdict that Ernest Snipes came to
bis death from accidental gun shots
at the hands of George E. Sampson.
The national government will issue .
