Hsmtforg i|frali> ESTABLISHED IN APRIL, 1891 ? A. W. KNIGHT; Editor. , f Thursday, Oct. 24, 1907. ?1?*??11??????? Evidently Col. William Jennings Bryan, who has twice led the Democratic party to disastrous defeat, is willing to lead a forlorn hope again if he is bidden. Well, it might as j well be Bryan as anybody else. Then, j too, he has gotten used to defeat by this time. When the national Democratic party gets to where it stands for something, then and only then will there be any hope of electing a Dem" . ocratic president. Until that time, any old candidate will do. It makes little difference who is to be offered up on the altar of his country. This newspaper is not a warm v friend of State Superintendent ofj Education Martin, but it does seem that he should be consulted at least by the governor when appointing members of the State Board of Edu, cation. These men are to assist the State superintendent in his work, and it seems only right and proper that he should be consulted as to the appointments. The statement comes from Washington that the officials of the postoffice department are somewhat exercised over the fact that so few are white men applying for positions in the mail service, the reason assigned being that there are so many negroes in the service white men do not care to enter it. Which is no doubt correct. The government will have to quit mixing the races in the mail ? service sooner or latex, xui cificiency of the service, and the sooner they do it the better. White men as a rule, whether they be of Southern or Northern birth, are not going to mix with negroes either socially or : . in business. The row between Governor Ansel and Superintendent of Education Martin takes a serious' turn if the story sent out from Columbia as to the governor's appointments on the State board of education be true. We are loath to believe that the governor would attempt to practice denominationalism or prostitute his high office to this end. The story comes from Columbia that the governor is using his authority to appoint members?of the board of education who are favorable to fixing the status of certain schools as colleges. We hope it is not true, and we hope that for one time the governor will depart from his usual policy of saying nothing and deny the story. , We have reduc )V une ui ?COUPON I tiit from 6 to 10 yar Tiber of yards free jinal purchase. Our brethren should be more charitable. Nothing is to be gained by such language, and no doubt Mr. Appelt will come : back with a reply in kind.. It is said that Jas. A. Hoyt, now connected with the News and Courier as Columbia correspondent, has bought the Greenville Piedmont, and will assume editorial charge in a short time. Mr. Hoyt is a bright and energetic newspaper man, and no doubt the Piedmont will grow and prosper greatly under his management. The present editor, Marshall Moore, has developed the paper wonderfully, and it now claims the largest circulation of any daily above Columbia, which statement has not T 1 12 ?3 ueen cnaneugcu. At the recent Episcopal convention in Richmond, Va., Bishop Potter entertained at dinner a negro bishop, of Monrovia, West Africa. The negro's name is Ferguson, and it is said he was born in Charleston. This action of Bishop Potter in thus establishing a standard of social equality between the races, has been strongly condemned not only in Richmond but all over the South. Referring to an editorial in reference to the cuts sent us advertising the State Fair, the Yorkville Enquirer, one of the very best newspapers in the State, says: . "Yes, contemporary, we also received these cuts. They came express, paid, and along with them came a letter containing a 'complimentary' pass. But we are not using the cuts. If we felt that we were under any special obligation to Columbia, or the 'State Fair,' we would be glad to discharge that ob ligation, as we try to uiscxutrgeuuici obligations, with cash. But really we do not see why the Enquirer should be the only institution in this locality to be called upon to contribute its stock in trade for the purposes of the 'fair,' and until we are shown the reason and justice of such a demand, we do not propose to comply. But we do not want to be understood as complaining at the fair people for not buying space in The Enquirer. We have no such complaint, and we have no feeling of resentment against them. If we did have such a feeling, we would not even be willing to give them the free, advertising they will get from these remarks." All of which is in exact accord with the policy of this newspaper.
