State Superintendent of Education Martin also wants the salary of his office raised it seems. Even if it is, we doubt very much if it will do him any good. He's not likely to be elected again. The salary paid him now is $1,900 a year, and that's more than he's worth. A news item says that Attorney General Lyon is preparing to push the railroad merger suits, and that he will ask the legislature to appropriate $40,000 to pay expenses. If it is to cost this much the cases had best not be tried. The people need $40,000 too badly to have it spent for such a purpose. ? - - ? ? All signs point to State pronimtion in South Carolina at an early - day. Possibly the general assembly at its session in January will pass such a measure. The indications point that way at least. Those towns and counties who have been running on a low tax levy because of large dispensary profits had might as well prepare for the inevitable, and the promoters of new counties had better go slow. You can't run a town or county on wind. ?? ? We have received a copy of The " . Tiger, the college paper of Gemson, with a marked paragraph stating the thing the boys at college miss most is their county newspaper. The article asks that every newspaper in the State put the college library on their list free, stating that this would be a good advertisement for the newspapers. We don't see it that way. If a boy is able to go to college he is able to pay 75c for his county paper during the college term. Salaries of State officers are high enoucrh. if we are to judge by the number of candidates offering for the various positions at every election. There is never any lack of candidates because of the salaries paid. With the State getting deeper in debt each year, there is little probability of any increase. Which is entirely right and proper. We know of few State officials who are worth more than they are being paid, and some are getting a blamed sight more than they are worth. The Herald has been sent some cuts advertising the State Fair, which we are asked to insert free on the ground that the fair is a State institution. We regret that we cannot see our way clear to do this. It costs us money to get out our paper, and there is no reason why the country newspapers should not be paid for their space just the same as the dailies. We have noticed half page advertisements of the Fair in the State and Greenville News, and we suppose these ads. were paid for. If so, why the discrimination? If space in the weeklies is worth anything at all, it is worth paying for, and, for our part, we do not propose to give away our space to anybody. ? - - - ? it The free list has been suspended on The Herald for some time. We notice however, that a number of weeklies are running the cuts, thus taking away trade from the merchants of their home towns and sending it to Columbia's merchants. Some times we wonder if country newspaper men will ever learn that they should work solely for the interest of the merchants and business men out of whom they get a living. Found?A gold watch charm. Children's SI ! for men Make our store headquan i. BHABI The usual press notices are being I sent but from Columbia as to the inadequacy of the salaries of State officials. Articles like these have gotten to be a regular thing about I this time of year and attract little or no attention. Possibly the space I writers are hard up for something to write about. It is now said that Governor Ansel will recommend that the salary of the governor be increased from $3,000 to $4,000 a year. Mayor Rhett has been. informed by officials of the Southern Railway and Atlantic Coast Line that both of these roads had determined to comply with his request to put Charleston on a parity with Norfolk in rates from the West, on grain, packing house products, and any other article on which it might seem possible to develop an export business. This is o fino thino^ far Charleston, and the mayor is to be congratulated on the success of his efforts. Charleston can be made a great city if her business men will show the proper spirit. With this rate concession and a direct steamship line to Europe, the matter now seems squarely up to Charleston's business interests as to what the future of the city shall be. ' The Cotton Market.
