In the circuit court at Orangeburg ! last week a verdict for $6,500 damages was found against the Southern Railway for the death of a young white brakeman at Branchville several months ago. The Oak Grove school, near Ehr , hardt, opened its fall session last |; Monday. The school is again in charge of Mr. R. B. Sawyer as principal, who managed the school very successfully last year. Ten pages again this week, and it begins to look like we'll have to keep , it up for some time to come. The Herald is giving more reading matter for a dollar than any weekly ! newspaper in this section. The eight-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Beard, of the Clear 1 Pond section, died early Sunday 1 morning, after a short illness. Bamberg is getting to be an automobile town. Last Saturday Col. Jno. F. Folk, Dr. H. F. Hoover, Messrs. Jones Williams and Henry ||$rj F. Bamberg ordered a machine each. They purchased the latest models Hi made by the Ford people. When these four arrive, this will give us six automobiles in Bamberg, and doubtless others, who are now considering buying, will do so at an early day. You can't keep Bamberg down. She is bound to keep up with the times. < P?f s ' - The Peoples Drug Co. received this week a very handsome soda fountain, and it is now being put in position. E. T. LaFitte, Esq., has sold his house and lot on New Bridge street to Mr. D. A. Kinard, the price paid being $2,500. The streets have been pretty well crowded the past few days with people from the country, who were in town shopping. The Woman's Home Mission Society will meet next Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock in the ladies' parlor, of the Methodist church. Men's and ladies' reliable wool underwear at W. D. Rhoad's. A negro child about three years old was burned to death on the plantation, of Mr. A. E. H. Simmons near town Tuesday. The child was playing near the fire when its clothes caught. All male persons who were 21 years of age on or before the 1st day of January, 1907, are liable to $1.00 poll tax.
