Three white men charged with
murder were acquitted in South Carolina
last week, the victims in each
caae being young white men. This
does not look much like the law
against murder is being enforced.
Some of this discussion of the immigration
question is very foolish.
The South needs men who are willing
to work. It makes little difference
whether a man is poor or rich, but
if he is honest, thrifty and industrious,
we need him. For our part,
we want all the immigrants of this
class we can get, and so far we have
not heard of anybody wanting to
bring in jail-birds or thieves.
The railroad is going to be built.
The men behind the project are
thoroughly in earnest, and we feel
sure they will go forward to success.
Of course it is going to take time,
and one need not think the road will
be completed in the next few months.
But you can rest assured that it will
be built. The business men of Bamberg
*?nd Ehrhardt mean business,
and they hope to enlist the aid, sympathy
and support of Walterboro's
people.
City council has done well to raise
the tax levy. If we want improvements
we must pay for them. We
. don't want to see a dollar wasted,
but the town cannot keep up unless
we spend money, and to get this
money taxes must be increased. As
it is, we have the lowest tax rate of
any properous town in this section,
and eight or even ten mills will not
be burdensome. A license ordinance
is the next thing in order, and we
trust council will start such a system,
commencing with the new year.
We feel proud of Bamberg, and
we congratulate our citizens on the
earnest, enthusiastic manner in
which they have taken hold of the
railroad proposition. That success
will be the outcome of their efforts
we have no doubt. Bamberg, Ehrhardt
and Walterboro are to be unbottled,
and v/e know of nothing
that will give a greater impetus to
the growth and prosperity of these
towns than the building of this proposed
railroad. Walterboro so far
has showh little or in fact no interest
in the project. They should join in
with us. That town will be given
representation on the board of directors
if their citizens will take
stock. This is not a selfish movement
for the benefit of Bamberg
alone. We want all sections and
