Short Locals.
- Miss Birdie Gill has accepted a
position with H. F. McGowan.
Our farmers must take an interest
in the cotton association to make it a
success.
D. J. Delk has for sale two fine
Jersey milk cows, which he will sell
cheap or trade for beef cattle.
Thomas & Barton Co., of Augusta,
offer special bargains in their ad.

Mr. Thomas Black, a son of Dr.
If and Mrs. J. B. Black, graduated in
pharmacy in Atlanta last week.
Bamberg is glad to entertain the
delegates to the Charleston Presbytery,
which is in session here this
week.
Cotton% brought more than one
a; hundred dollars a bale on the Bam|p
berg market last week. It was long
f staple.
f The Herald prints ten pages this
week because of a larger ad vertisinng
f: patronage than usual. We trust it will
?' * keep up.
More Oliver typewriters are being
used in Bamberg now than any other
~ make. Nine machines are owned
here bv various parties.
I Our friend, J. Crum Smoak, will
teach the Edisto school the coming
. year, and we feel sure he will give
great satisfaction to patrons and trustees.
The fourth quarterly conference
of the Bamberg Methodist church
will be held next Sunday. Presiding
I Elder J. W. Kilgo will preach next
Sunday morning.
If you are at all interested in the
prosperity of the town and county,
attend the railroad meeting in the
opera house to-morrow (Thursday)
evening at eight o'clock.

cordially invited to attend.
The Herald is late again this week,
though no fault of ours. Our paper
did not arrive on time last"'week, and
the same thing happened this week.
We expect to make the express company
pay for the delay.

fall and winter opening of millinery
next Tuesday and Wednesday, October

The Bamberg county cotton asso- ;

The negro McLeod who was refc"

into the house of Mr. Kinard near
Ehrhardt, has been carried to Orangeburg
to finish serving a sentence
in that county. It seems he
escaped from the chain gang over
there.
Your attention is directed to the
ad. of Lombard Iron Works. This
firm carries a full line of engines,
boilers, saw mills and all sorts of
machinery and dtn ship on short
notice. They also do all kinds of repair
work. Get their prices when
you need anything in their line.
Those nice cloaks are going fast,
so come in before the line is broken.

buying early at W. D. Rhoad's.

Judging from the names who are :
conspicuous by their absence on the
list of subscriptions to the capital

some of our business men were dead. 1

Last fall the first frost was October
11 and there was a killing frost
the following morning, the 12th.
There was no more frost and ice during
the month till the 29th when the
temperature dropped to 29. During
September 1906 the lowest temperature
was 61.

Do not kill tne Dun oais. n is
said that in several parts of the country
the gunners are killing them. It
is against the law. The penalty is
$20 fine. Look out or you will be
brought up for trial by the game
warden. It is a violation of an act
of the Legislature.
What's new and what's to be worn
this fall and winter in silks and dress
goods may be best discovered at Hoo
ton's.
Chief of Police S. A. Hand went
to Charleston Tuesday to bring back
a white man named Singletary who
stole a gun from a traveling horse
trader named Martin who is now
making Bamberg his headquarters.
Singletary was working for Martin
and stole his gun and skipped out.
Chief Hand had him arrested in
Charleston, and he will be tried here.

Interest for County.
The interest on daily deposits of
county funds secured by County
Treasurer Jno. F. Folk, which has
already accumulated, amounts to
about $160, which is now on deposit
to the credit of the county. The

district is.also on deposit at four per
cent, interest, and the amount of interest
on this fund as well as interest

Hotel Sold.
Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Owens, Sr., of

Mr. L. C. Rice his hotel at Denmark.
The price paid was $13,000, which
includes several acres of land. The I
hotel is a large two-story brick '
structure, and it is possible that it !
may be enlarged after Mr. and Mrs. |
Owens take charge. The transfer is !
to take place January 1st, and the J

The fourth division of the Woman's
Missionary Society of the Barnwell
association held its quarterly meeting
in the Baptist church of Bamberg
on September 27.
Nearly all of the churches were
represented and the reports were
very encouraging. The women of
this association have already given
more than the amount asked for by
the State convention.
Mrs. E. A. Sojourner is vice-president
of this association, and much
credit is due her for the success of
the work. She has indeed proven
hprsplf tr> hp a creat leader amoner
the women.
Mrs. W. D. Rice, Jr., of Denmark,
was the presiding officer. Many interesting
talks were made on the
subject of missions. Rev. E. M.
Lightfoot, of Orangeburg, made a
stirring address on "Woman's part
in the work of missions."
This was a helpful and interesting
meeting and the women determined
to put forth a greater effort in the
work for the Master.
