A Tragedy of the Civil War.
Not all the sad stories of wartime <
come from the battle-field. Many a J
heart-break is not recorded on the :
list of theldlled and wounded. The 1
C1V1I War Knew liu mure ut;
' f currence than the following incident,
taken from the New York Sun. A
soldier had enlisted from his home in ]
Georgia, where his father remained ]
. undisturbed through the struggle.
The young man fought through the ]
war without a scratch save a slight
wound which left him a little deaf. !
This affliction he never mentioned in
his letters. j
After the surrender he sent his
? ; father word that he would reach
home about a certain date. Travel
was then uncertain, and he could <
? . not tell just when he would arrive.
His father prepared to receive him.
He had brought out the best plate,; <
. which had been secreted for a long j <
time, and with gold which had been j1
exhumed he bought such substantial! [
and delicacies as the Southern marp.
' ket at that time afforded. As many
of the old-time neighbors as were liv- t
in the vicinity were invited to the
hnrriA cominc.
1 The young soldier arrived on the c
plantation the night before the earliest
date he had mentioned. It was
late and the family had retired, but r
the dog heard the noise and began to
bark. The sound roused the father, c
who rose and got his shotgun. The ii
country was overrun at the time with T
stragglers and sneak-thieves. The t
father, gun in hand, weBt to the door, |
saw the approaching figure and chal- i
$ lenged it. The young man, being <
deaf, made no reply, but still ad- s
|| vanced, whereupon the father raised c
his gun and fired. His son fell, shot
Kf'K through the heart. c
It was a pitiful sight to see that s
k/ almost crazed father carrying his 1
~. lifeless son into the home which had i
? been made ready to welcome him. J
If The next day the guests arrived. InI
stead of joyously greeting the re- g
turned soldier, they gazed at the still
form, wrapped in a flag for which \
!- the young man had bravely fought, t

Turbulent Time for Tillman.
Sacramento,Cal., Sept.21.?Sen- (]
If ator Benjamin Tillman participated
Sgf. - in the most turbulent meeting of his J
lecture tour last night, and the row <
K; was all over his insistence to speak on s
& the race question.
The lecture was under the auspices J
^ of the Young Men's Christian asso- i
ciation, and the president, respond- ]
ing to the influence of the large colored
population, demanded that the s

', - talking about the race question. i
When the meeting opened, the i
president of the Young Men's Chris- 1
' tian association informed him that
the subject of the lecture would be c
"The Trend of American Politics."
Tillman got hopping maid in an in- (
stant and said he would not be gagged
by a parcel of mules. Then the
Y. M. C. A. official told the senator
to get out in the street and talk;
that he could not deliver an undesir- (
able address in the Y. M. C. A. <
building. Tillman offered to return [
the check which had been given him <
and jt was not accepted.
Then Senator Tillman said he t
would talk about politics, but would 1
interject the negro question. And }
| ' another bigger row followed in j
which many of the audience partici- (
pated. Men rose up and denounced (
the senator and he fought back. Fin- <
r ally the question was put to the au- i
* dience, whether the race question
should be discussed or not, and Tillman
was voted down. He acquiesced,

Mill is Making Money.
Bamberg, September 16.?The annual
meeting of the stockholders of
the Bamberg Cotton Mills Company
was held in the office of the company
{ today. A complete and very satis\
factory statement was rendered by J.
H. Cope, president and treasurer,
showing a net profit of about 35 per
* . cent for the year. President Cope
I stated that he had considerable trouble
about labor during the greater
portion of the year, and that the prof<
/ its would have been much larger but Q
for this trouble. -]
, The entire product of the mill has 2
been sold up to April 1, 1908, and c
some of it up to July 1, 1908. The
cotton to manufacture the goods sold
has also been purchased at a price
which assures a handsome profit for i
next year. A semi-annual dividend <
.of seven per cent was paid to the <
stockholders before this meeting? 1
this being the custom?and this was \
not included in the net profits of the <
statement today. If the dividends \
had been deferred until the meeting <
had been held the profits would have <
shown about 42 per cent instead of \
a laroro nnrtinn of fhp nrofiti? -
