Mr. J. W. Barnes, one of the fine
farmers of Orangeburg county, was
J- in the city Tuesday. He says his
crop is poor this year. He has recently
completed a handsome new
residence, in which he has installed
a modern system of water works and
all the other conveniences enjoyed
by dwellers in the cities.

Mr. L. N. Bellinger returned last
Friday from a trip to the Jamestown
Exposition. He was there for the

Dispensary Statement.
v In another column will be found the
quarterly statement of the dispen
saries in this county. This statement
shows that the profits for the
quarter were $3,841.77, of which
amount the county gets $1,536.70,
the towns the same amount, while
the schools gets $768.37. The expense
account for the quarter
amounts to $3,618.96, which is heavier
than it will be later on. Starting
off the new system costs more than
it will after it gets to running
smoothly. The showing made will
compare favorably with any of the
other counties.
Scholarship Examination.

examinations for Winthrop and
Clemson, also for the College of
Charleston and the South Carolina
University, both of these colleges
offering scholarships as well. There
were seven young ladies who stood
the examination for Winthrop, six
applying for the vacant scholarship
from this county, and one for entrance.
There were eight young men
for Clemson, three for the scholarship
and five for entrance. There
were no applications for the College
of Charleston or South Carolina University
scholarships.
The papers of the various contestants
have been sent on, and the
winners will be announced in few
weeks.
Rowdy Soldiers.
Last Friday morning a special train
passed through Bamberg conveying a
lot of soldiers from Alabama to
Charleston, where they are to have
an encampment on Sullivan's Island.
As the train passed the depot here
the soldiers amused themselves
throwing rocks, railroad spikes, and
other missiles at people who happened
to be standing near the track. Cary
Brabham, the negro porter at Johnson's
Hotel, was struck in the face,
ripar thp pvp. bv a railroad spike, and
a very painful wound was inflicted.
Cary says he thought he was shot at
first. The train did not stop here.
Colored Folks Celebrate.
The colored people of Bamberg
observed the 4th of July in a becoming
manner. A joint celebration of
the Methodist and Baptist Sunday
schools was held at the Baptist
church. The program consisted of
music, patriotic songs, a debate, the
subject discussed being who was the
greatest man, Washington or Lincoln,
recitations, etc. A picnic was
held on the grounds, and in the afternoon.
there was a game of base
bail, and they didn't fight or row
over the game either. The day passed
off quietly, and the affair was a
most creditable and successful one.
We are glad to note this disposition
on the part of our colored people.
It was a most appropriate way of
celebrating the day.
Sunday Selling Illegal.
Attorney General Lyon has written
the dispenser at Walterboro as
to selling whiskey on Sunday on prescription
of physicians. He advises
that the law prohibits the sale of t
whiskey on Sundays and legal holi- i
days, and there is no exception in i
any case. The Bamberg county board 1
passed a resolution that whiskey t
would be furnished on physicians' (
prescriptions on Sunday, provided s
the physician stated that he was in (
actual attendance on the patient and 1
that the whiskey was absolutely ne- 1
cessary. Uner the attorney general's >
construction this is illegal and will 1
have to be discontinued. The law ]
makes absolutely no provision for i
getting whiskey on Sunday, no mat- <
ter what the need may be. 1

rotes and one for 25 votes, which had to
