" . Writing from the Russian famine
V district, Dr, Kennard, who was sent
by the Society of Friends in London,
. -'. to investigate conditions among the j
peasantry, draws an appalling picture
of the suffering. After calling attention
to the urgent and immediate
need of funds, he says:
"This is the worst famine Russia
has known. No less than 20,000.000
. peeple distributed throughout the
southeastern provinces cannot live
without aid to see another harvest,
v I may say that this figure has not
' only been approved by the zemstvos'
organization, but by the government
I "Funds will be needed to the end
of July ' to feed all these millions
and then the harvest will bring relief,
but there are many hundreds of
. thousands to whom the harvest will
not bring relief, for they have nei'
ther land nor cattle. The few cows
; that are in existence are in such a
pitiful condition that they are useless
far milking purposes. The result
is that babies and young children are
being forced to eat coajrse black bread
and the indigestible young cucumbers
which are luxuries to the aduits, but
are death to the baby.
' These people have sold their .ail
and in most cases have likewise sold
in advance ail that the harvest might
bring them. They have sold themselves
and their worn, and from ail
, over the southeastern provinces re
ports are coming in of young women
and girls forced to prostitute themselves
to obtain food. For these suffering
people, to whom the coming
harvest means nothing, relief must be
afforded during the whole of the coming
year. Meanwhile epidemics of disease
add terrible conditions."

Liverpool, England, the new pastor
of Fifth Avenue Baptist Church, in

lace by resenting being called John
v D. Rockefeller's pastor, says tbat be
"wants the workingmau and the shop
girl to consider his church their home
and that it is not in any way tainted
^ by the touch of Standard Oil millions.
He has given out the following statev
ment:
"I want the shop girl and the working

It is not a millionaire's church.
"Rockefeler is not officially connected
with the Fifth Avenue Church.

The Florida senate Tuesday adopted
a resolution to amend section 3,
article 6, of the constitution of the
state of Florida, by which the four- |
teenth and fifteenth amendments were

of the ratification of these
amendments before the United States
court and looks toward the disfranchisement

CONVICTS ROUNDED UP.
One Was Killed and Two Probably
Fatally. Wounded.
Four negro convicts who recently I
escaped from the Durham coal mines* 1
at Pittsburg, Ga., entered the home !

of J.. E. Denson, in Chattooga county, i
Thursday afternoon, securing clothing !
and provisions and $50 in money. They j
threw off their convict garb and put ]
on some of the stolen ciothes. A posse J
formed and chased them.
They were overtaken in a patch of j
woods, and the posse began firing j
upon them. One convict was killed
and two others wounded, perhaps fataiiy.
The fourth convict escaped. The
sheriff of Chaaooga county reached
the scene after the shooting.
This accounts for all of the nine 1
negroes who escaped from the Dur- j
ham mine. Five were captured near |
the mines, and only one is still at !
liberty. Xone of the three white escapes
has been heard of since the
twelve got away. The escape was effected
by one of the negroes, a preacher
named Sam Johnson, gaining pos- j
, session of a key that unlocked a gate i
to an abandoned wing of the mines. |
The convicts then found a weak place, J
in the top of the shaft, through which j
they dug in a short time.
STRIKERS RETURN TO WORK, 'j
Fight Against Montgomery Traction |
Company a Losing One.
The strike of the employees of the
Montgomery, Ala., Traction company
was settled Thursday and the men
returned to work as non-union men
and at the same wages as they received
before the strike.
The strikers lost every point in
the argument. General Manager Ragland
of the company, having declared
that he would not treat with the
strikers except as individuals, a num- I
ber of the men visited his office and !
appealed for work. He reiterated his !
statement, but said the company would j
give employment to all men who would I
sign an affidavit that they were not
members of a union and that they
wouid work on the old scaie of wages.
At the close of the day 61 strikers
! had signed these affidavits. They will
! be given employment as fast as room
| can be made for them.
