Justice For the Negro.
We wish some of our Northern
friends who entertain the idea that
a negro cannot get justice from the
white pedple of the South could have
witnessed a scene in our court house
last week. A negro (Victor Corry)
- was being tried for house breaking
, and larceny. He was too poor to employ
a lawyer, so he conducted his
, own case. The jury was composed
of white men and every witness
against the negro was a white man.
The negro had not a single witness.
He cross-examined the witnesses,
went on the stand in his own behalf
and told his story and was acquitted,

Death of Dr. W..A. Hanberry.
Last Tuesday night at 8:20 o'clock,
j; -: just as all nature was wrapped in the
mantle of night, the spirit of another
landmark passed away.
, ' Dr. Washington Aaron Hanberry
was born November 13th, 1838, and
had the care of his parents from early;
years till their death. He served in
the war of the sixties, belonging to
: V Co. I, 5th regiment, S. C. cavalry,
and his comrades have often spoken
of his bravery and fortitude.
His first wife was Mrs. Gaddy, of
Jteyetteville N. C., but she lived only
a few months.
~ . ; After the death of his parents he
went to Baltimore where he went in
tjhe tailoring business, which he was
very successful in. In August of
1874 he was married to Miss Eleanor
fe Hurst, of Charleston. Eight child
ren, two daughters and six sons,
blessed this union.
After his second marriage he bev
gan to pay much attention to his
* practice of dentistry along with his
I farming interest. He traveled in
; ' . Ins buggy to many homes to attend
5- his dental duties, and many will re}
. member him as a splendid dentist,
1 hut he had given up his practice for
several years, as his declining health
forbade and turned his every
thought to his farm near Denmark,
where he lived till the time of his

His body was embalmed and lay in
V state till his two sons arrive from
Houston. His remains were laid to
rest in the Denmark cemetery, beside
his two little sons on Friday afternoon.
His funeral services were
' v conducted in Pythian honors he
being among the oldest Knights of
his lodge.
His pall bearers were: Messrs.
Isaac Jennings, J. D. Milhous, Wade
Faust, Shannon Ray, Wm. Kittrell
and J. Z. Brooker.
Dr. Hanberry was a very energetic
man and even when his health began
to fail he clung to his duties till
nearly the very last. He has been a
sufferer of Bright's disease for
several years, which was the cause of
his death.
He leaves a widow, two daughters,
and four sons, all of which are
grown, and three are married, to
mourn his loss, also three sisters and
a lot of relatives and friends. May
God comfort them in their sore affliction.

Dial, of Columbia, has been appointed
assistant to Commissioner Wat^
son, in the department of commerce
and immigration, to succeed Mr. K.
Beverly Herbert, who has resigned
in order to pursue the practice of
Jaw. Mr. Herbert has been with
Hie department for two years and
has proved a very efficient assistant
to Mr. Watson, having made a trip
to Europe in the interests of the
work and attended to the duties of
the office in Mr. Watson's absence
last summer. Mr. Dial has been for
some time with the Palmetto Ice and
Fuel Company, and is a very capable
young business man.

SELLS SKIN TO SAVE FAMILY.
Wife and Children Starving, Man
Makes Desperate Offer.
"Starving family wish any work to
do for winter. Clothing and shoes
wanted. Landlord will put themx on
the street. I will give my skin and
blood before they go homeless. Janitress,
112 East Eighty-eighth street."
His wife having put the foregoing
advertisement in the New York Herald,
Alois Hoffman, a baker, who lives in
the cellar of the flat house at the address
given, declares as his last resort
that he will sell his skin for grafting
purposes and his life fluid for purposes
of experiment for money to keep his
wife and two children from starving.
Mrs. Hoffman has until recently man
aged to get ner rent, gas ana com rree
of charge by acting as janitress of the
building, while her husband, traveling
from one end of the city to the other,
has endeavored to earn enough pennies
to buy his family their meager j
daily fare.
Several days ago, however, the .own- !
er of the building informed the Iloffmans
that they would have* to vacate
their cellar room because, he alleged, j
their services as caretakers had been
unsatisfactory to the tenants. |
The family is without a cent. One
of the children is twelve years oid
and the other a baby only fourteen
radnths old.

FROZEN IN HIS OWN BLOOD.
Rich Hermit Found Murdered In Hut
at Mudlake, Mich.
Daniel Heastou, a hermit, was found
frozen in his own blood in a small hut
near the house where Heaston had
been living alone, near Mudlake, Mich.
The shocking mutilation of the body and
other evidences about the place led to
the conclusion tfyat the old man had
been brutally tortured to make him reveal
the hiding place of his money.
Amputated fingers and foes lay scattered
about, and the appearance of a
heavy rope and of a beam over which
it hung, coupled with marks on the
victim's neck, indicated that he had
been strung up to the rafter for a time.

It is thought that the murderers secured
the booty they sought, as no
money was found in the place. Heaston
inherited a considerable fortune
several years ago and had recently been
displaying and spending his money
quite freely.

is attracting the attention of leading

physicians there. It was while amusing
herself with an ordinary tin tube
pea shooter, or "blower/.' that little
Miss Lavoie Invented the scheme of
using a round headed hatpin instead
of peas, as the hatpin when blown
from the tube served as a dart and
would stick in the target.
The sport became exciting, and each
time the little girl blew harder. Finally
she put the shooter to her month,

sucked the pin, head first, into her
throat. She coughed violently, but the
next moment she had swallowed it.
Physicians were powerless to remove
the pin without performing a most
serious operation. She was in no pain,
but coughed almost continuously. She
was submitted to the X ray, and the
black headed hatpin could be seen in
her stomach.
Died From Standing on Head.
Standing on his head to amuse his
father and brother caused the death of
Walter Higgins, eight years old, of
Pittsburg. The little fellow, who was
in high spirits on Sunday morning capered
about the house and stood on his
head several times. Late in the afternoon
he complained that his head ached,
and the pain continued all night On
Monday a doctor was called in, but the
pain grew worse instead of better, and
at 4 o'clock in the afternoon of the
same day he became unconscious, dying
three hours later.

The Judge Uses Forceful Language.
Judge W. B. Simmons, of Fincastle,
Va., told the reporter that L. & M.
paint was used on his residence in 1882,
and held its color well for 21 years; he
furthermore said that 3 years ago he was
induced to use another paint and is sorry
he did, because the other paint didn't
make good. The judge will now always
use L. & M., because he knows if
any defect exists in L. & M. paint the
house will be repainted for nothing. The
L. & M. zinc hardens the L. & M. white
lead and makes L. & M. paint wear like
iron for 10 to 15 years. Actual cost of
L. & M. about $1.20 per gallon. Donations
of L. & M. made to churches. Sold

The dispensary commission was to
meet today (Wednesday) to give a
hearing to the numerous whiskey
I houses to whom the State disoensarv
owes money. Claims have been filed
to the amount of more than $765,000,
and it looks to us, if the commission
can sell all the stock on hand at a
profit the dispensary will not pay its
debts.
