?Rev. and Mrs. T. C. O'Ddell spent
?? several days here last week with relatives.
They were on their way to Allendale,
Mr. O'Dell having been assigned to that
charge.
^ Negro Preacher Suicides.
Rev. C. P. Nelson, colored, pastor of the
? African Methodist church at Orangeburg,
committed suicide at his home in that city
last-Thursday by cutting his throat from
ear to ear with a razor, having previously
attempted suicide by taking laudanum.
The cause was evidently financial troubles.
During the summer he got his church
officers to borrow $500, they thinking
they were borrowing only $150.00. The
N preacher had the handling of the money
and had spent it and could not replace it.
n Exposure coming on, with threats of
prosecution, he killed himself to avoid
the disgrace.

Country Correspondence.
Quite a period of time has elapsed since
last we wrote to (he dear old Herald and
many changes have taken place.
The farmers are through gathering and
are nestling in their chimney corners
thinking over the debts they owe and patiently
awaiting the Yule tide and wishing
old Santa Clans a safe trip from his
snowy climes with his presents for the
little folks.
Little Miss Grace Truman Hill is visiting
her grandmother in Bamberg.
Mr. Emmett McMillan has sold his
plantation in our midst to Mr. Simmie
.Sandifer, and has moved to Hartzog. Mr.
Sandifer has moved to his new home.
Miss Pauline Clayton, of Colston, is
visiting her sister, Mrs. Wilmot Sandifer,
in our vicinity.
Dr. W. A. Hanberry, of Denmark,
spent Monday at Mr. O. P. Jordan's.
Cards are out announcing the marriage
of Miss Donie Morris, of Clear Pond, to
M r. Jeremiah Chassereau. of Ehrhardt. on
Sunday, 23rd instant, at home.
Mr. Willie Bishop has sold bis farm in
our community to Mr. Geo. Smoak, of
Bamberg, and moved to Columbia. Mr.
Smoak moved in last Friday.
Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Dozier, of Denmark,
were visitors at Pine Forest Tuesday.
We are sorry to hear that Mr. William
Hughes and family think of leaving from
our midst for the land of flowers. They
expect to move during the latter part
of the holidays.
Mr. and Mrs. M. C. Sandifer, of Bamberg,
spent Sunday at Mr. 0. P. Jordan's.
Mr. Dave Smoak is teaching the Sassafras
school, and has a flourishing little
school.
The Hampton school has closed till
after Christmas on account of too few
pupils.
