Short Locals.
Our merchants are beginning to open
up Christmas goods.
The State Baptist convention decided
to meet in Oraugeburg uext year.
During Christmas wtek our people will
see the necessity of paving Main street.
Most of the Fitting School students
spent the holidays of last week at their
UUU1CO.
Mr. W. M. Brabham is having a new
barn and stables erected at his residence
in this city.
There was a good crowd here last Monday
acd our merchauts seemed to be doing
some business.
Watarworks on Main street at least and
good streets and sidewalks are the next
improvements in order.
Underwear, all kinds, cheap at W. D.
Rhoad's.
On a trip over in Orangeburg county
last Sunday we noticed that several people
were holding cotton.
The Herald wants a correspondent at
every post office in the county. Come to
see us or write us about it.
Klauber is continuing the great reduction
sale. Be sure to visit his store every
Saturday, as special prices prevail that
day.
Give us good streets and sidewalks,
gentlemen of the city council. Our
people will not object to the expense, we
feel sure.
Those Xmas suits and overcoats for

Now is the time to pave Main street,
for the city's finances were never in better
condition. Let waterworks and paved
streets be the slogan.

Saturday was the last day for paying
the income tax without a penalty. We
wonder how many people in Bamberg
county paid this tax, yet we are sure some
are liable.
We can sell now every i>ound of meal
and hulls we can make this season, and
we advise all parties to secure their immediate
and prospective supplies.

house of Mr. J. M. Jennings next to
Mayor G. Moye Dickinson, and will move a

Supervisor E. C. Bruce brought us last i
Saturday two mammoth turnips of the I
purple top variety. One of them measured
twenty-four inches around. They were
raised by a colored man named Alonzo
Johnson. ?

Mr. M. 0. Kinard has bought a lot and bouse
in town, which he will rent, he
buying the property solely as an investment.
We are glad to see such good
citizens as Mr. Kinard invest their money j
in Bamberg, and hope he will decide to t
move here.
There was only one public sale last
Monday, that being by the Master, of
a tract of land in Fispond township, con- taining
two hundred and nineteen acres.
It was sold in the case of Elliott V. Steedly
vs. Elliott F. Steedly, and was bought
in by John R. Bellinger, Esq., for Mrs.
Steedly for $850.
The Planters Mercantile Company
opened up for business this week, this
firm having taken over the business of
D. H. Counts & Co. Mr. W. M. Brabham
is president; J. E. Felder, formerly bookkeeper
for J. A. Byrd, is secretary and
treasurer, and the clerks are Messrs G. C.
Chandler, Mike Ayer and F. W. Free.
A long distance 'phone message from
Rev. Peter Stokes received this (Wednes- "
day) morning gives the news that Mr. I
Stokes is returned to the Bamberg church, I
which will be pleasant information to his I
large circle of friends. But of course we
? all expected that he would be sent back.
Rev. James W. Kilgo, who has been pre
siding elder of the Spartan ourg aismcc,
will be oar new presiding elder.
News was received here Tuesday morning
of the death of Mrs. J. W. Smoak,
of Young's Island, but who formerly
lived here. She had been sick for some
time with a cancer of the breast, which
was the cause of her death. Mrs. Smoak t
was a daughter of Mrs. Martha Antley, *
of the Fork section of Orangeburg county.
She was about 85 years, old and leaves
her husband and three children. Her remains
were laid to rest at Ebenezer
Methodist church over in Orangeburg
county yesterday morning.
