Senator Raises a Row in Vain at the
Pittsburg Station.
Pittsburg, Dec. 3.?Senator Benjamin
R. Tillman had an experience
at the union depot last night that
caused him to use graphic language
to the gateman. The senator was
on his way to Washington and had
gotten off the train to change cars.
At the last moment he went to the
' V- gate intending to pay his fare on the
train. The gateman refused to allow
him to pass without a ticket.
Expostulations were of no effect
and even the statement that the man
who wanted to pass was the [celebrated
South Carolina senator did
?' not move the obdurate attachees of
gps the Pennsylvania company.
. Mr. Tillman told the gateman
what he thought of the railroad com'
pany, individually and collectively.
He was mad all the way througn as
: he had to take a later train, lost his
? > first Pullman seat and was compelled
to put up with an upper berth.
The senator roasted Mayor Dunne
of Chicago before leaving. "As soon
t as a demonstratijn partly caused by
the Chicago newspapers, was made
against me," he said, "Dunne hedged
for fear of losing politically. I don't
t:; care whether he appeared or not, he
* at least showed poor taste in refusing
at the time and under the circumstances,
but he only did it for
IIJ' political reasons.'' j
When asked whether John R.
- > Walsh had inspired the demonstration
against him, Senator Tillman
said he did not know, but "some of
my friends think he did," he said.
:. "I believe he did, too. I meant
every word I said. JSo tar as oemg
afraid of any personal attack against
me, I never thought of it."
Congress met Monday, and at the
first session Senator Penrose offered
a resolution requesting the president
to furnish the Senate all information
regarding the discharge of three
regiments of negro soldiers. This
was done to forestall Senator Tillman,
as it was thought he was going
to introduce a similar resolution.

TAX NOTICE.
The county treasurer's office will be
open for the collection of State, county,
school and all otber taxes trom tne lotn
day of October, 1906, until the 15th day
of March, 1907, inclusive.
From the 1st day of January, 1907, until
the 21st day of January, 1907, a penalty
of 1 per cent, will be added to all unpaid
taxes. From the first day of February,
1907, until the 28th day of February,
1907, a penalty of 2 per cent, will be added
to all unpaid taxes. From the 1st day of
March, 1907, until the 15th day of March,
1907, a penalty of 5 per cent, will be
added to all unpaid taxes.
The following is the levy:
For State purposes, 5 mills.
For- county purposes, 4 mills.
Constitutional school tax, 3 mills.
Total, 12 mills.
