not stay on our hands long at this
price. We will prepay freight if
check accompanies order.
Our business men should remember
that people are kept away from Bamberg
because they cannot secure houses. A
loan and investment company ought to
be organized and houses for rent erected.
The trmwt.h of the town is retarded be
cause of a lack of houses for rent.
Agents for sewing machines, musical
instruments, medicines, books, etc., will
have to go out of business in Bambergr
? county, as many of our farmers are warning
all such to keep off their lands, as
these men interfere with their labor. A
negro will buy anything he can get on
credit and then his employer has the bill
to pay and maybe lose the hand, too, as
soon as he gets in debt. We are glad our
v planters are taking this action. It is
simply self-protection, and they should
have done so before this.
We see that some of the leading
negroes of the State have planned for a
conference on the race issue to be held in
Columbia in January, at which Governor
Heyward and other prominent white
men are to make addresses. We fail to
see where such a conference can do any
good. We are not concerned about what
the leading negroes say but what they do,
and white people should take no notice
of any such conferences. Let the negro
"make good" in regard to industry and
soberness, and let him be law-abiding
and there will be no occasion for any |
complaint at bis treatment in the Sontb.
The Gaffney Ledger last week had a
strong editorial in reference to the game
of "hold op" played by the hotel and
restaurant keepers of Columbia during
Pair Week. There was a local item in '
this newspaper in regard to the same
thing. The editor did not go to the Fair.
He stayed at home and worked in order
to let the printers get off. They reported
to us that they were most outrageously
held up by the boarding house and restau*
rant keepers and others. In fact they
stated the only thing to be had in Colum
bia at a reasonable price was fruit. We
have not attended a State Fair in years
as at this time of the year we are too
busy to go away on pleasure trips, but
the young men who told us of these matters
are absolutely reliable. If Columbia
wants the people of the State to visit her,
N? this practice of extortion must be stopped,
for most assuredly we will adyise the
citizens of Bamberg to stay away next
year unless there is some reasonable assurance
that they will not be charged
outrageous prices for everything.
