The city council of Columbia will require
the Bell Telephone company to
place its wires underground on the princinal
Rtreets. Bambere's citv council
should require the same thing here, so far
as Main street is concerned. Now the
j|\ telephone company has a line of poles on
both sides of Main street, and as the street
is very narrow, they are very much in the
way. <
Keep out the flies by using wire screens
for your doors and windows. L. B. Fow|
ler sells them.
The editor of this paper has written
j?v many letters and taken much interest in
the depot matter, for we realized the
harm being done the business interests of
the town by having no freight warehouse.
We regret that the commission was
v | forced to take drastic action, but they
should have done so earlier. However,
if we get the right sort of huilding and
% platforms and get it in sixty days, we will
> be satisfied.
I Swimming pool will be opened from
the 3oth of May. Fifteen cents per bath

Mr. Geo. R. Bullock, manager of the
Bell Telephone Company at this place
? and other towns, is continually working
to improve the service of his conpany.
K n A new ringing attachment has just been
put in the exchange and a number of
other improvements made. New style
telephones are now being furnished, and
when the wires on Main street are taken
down and a cable strung in their place,
p' ' the company will be in position to give
still better service.
You can sing "shoo fly, don't bother
|. me," if you will use the wire doors and
window screens I am selling. Call at
P Brickie's bicycle shop and see them.
L. B. Fowler.
By reference to the letters published in
\ -another column it will be seen that the
-/ railroad commission has issued an order
* to the Southern Railway authorities requiring
them to complete sr new freight
depot at Bamberg in 60 days from the date
of the order. This means that the rail
road must complete toe Duuaing oy me
25th of July. We are glad the order has
been issued, and we presume the work
will now be commenced and pushed. We
have been without a depot for many
months, the old one being destroyed by
fire early in October of last year.
We have the prettiest lines of organdies
in white and colors, also silk mulls,
in town. When you want your commencement
dress give us a call. Prices

Armstp.ong-Johnson-Brabham Co,
At the recent meeting of the grand
lodge Knights of Pythias, a committee
consisting of J. J. McSwain, J. K. Willis,
D. L. Smith, Jno. F. Folk, and Montague
Triest was appointed to receive propositions
from towns and cities in the State
for the location of a Pythian orphanage.
This rommittee will visit the various
places who make offers for the orphanage
and will report on the matter at the
session of the grand lodge to be held in
Anderson next May. Why can't Bamberg
secure the location of the orphanage
here? All institutions of this charactei
are located in the up country at present,
and it is time the low country was getting
busy. What say our business men in regard
to making a proposition for the
orphanage?

?Exercises by Graduating Class.
Following is the graduating class for
this year: Shedrick Summers Arant,
Juriah Elizabeth Dash, Pearl Elizabeth
Delk, Edna Mabel Dukes, Bessie Ann
Felkel, Agnes May Hydrick, Jacob Shu
ford Huffman, Genevieve Theresa Kirsch,
J. Rob Lawrence, Jr., Agnes Eloise McCants,

Rich, George William Ulmer, Ella Havilla
Kinsey, Lissie Viola Ulmer, Lou
Ellen Utsey.
The faculty this year consists of Hugo
G. Sheridan, Headmaster, mathematics
and science; W. D. Roberts, A. B., Latin
and Greek ; Jno. G. Stabler, A. B., Eng
lisli and history; Miss Lena Walser,
music and elocution. Miss Bessie Yarn
is matron of the girls' hall, and Mrs.
Josephine Beach has charge of the boys'
hall.
The outlook of the school for another
year is bright. Plans are on foot for improvements
along all lines. And there is
no reason why the Fitting School should
not be one of the best of its kind in the
State. All that's needed is energy and
i push on the part of those who have it in
charge.
The health of the student body has been
unusually good during this sesssion.
There has been but few sick ones among
the students.
The school is indeed fortunate in securing
the services of Mrs. Josephine
Beach as matron of the boys' hall for another
year. Mrs. Beach is not only a very
efficient housekeeper, but her kindly disposition
and excellent character make
her a helpful friend to every student.
Certainly no school in the State can boast
a better matron.
Depot to be Built.
A few days ago a gentleman of this
town saw Bailroad Commissioner Caughman
on the train, and he asked as to the
status of the depot matter. The gentlemen
told him nothing had been done so

Caughman asked him to see the Editor of
The Herald, and to request that the editoi
write him at once if nothing had been
done towards starting the work. Wc
promptly wrote him that work had not
been commenced and that our people
were very sore over the treatment thej
were receiving. Last Saturday we received
the following, which is self explanatory
:
