Remember the Episcopal services at
the Methodist church here Friday evening,

of Aiken.
Rev. J. E. McManawav, field agent of
the Baptist Courier, preached at the Baptist
church here last Sunday morning and
&; evening.

City council, through the efforts of
Alderman Coouer. has had the sidewalk

for which work we are duly grateful.

An election was held in Spartanburg ,
county Tuesday on the dispensary question,
with the result that the dispensary
was voted out by a majority of at least
six to one.
p, - " The Simmons Hardware Company has
sold their repair shop to Mr. W. H." Patrick,
and he will have entire charge of
same hereafter. See the notice in anrj
v other column.
G. W. Moore, who has taught the colored
graded school at this place for sev5&>'v
eral vears. has been elected as principal
I of the Bennettsville graded school. He
left this week to assume charge.
We would be glad if those subscribers
SpX to whom we have sent duns would pay
what they owe us. This notice is intended
only for those who have received requests
1 for settlement of their indebtedness to
The Herald.
Mr. H. S. Spiers went to Columbia last
week and swore out a warrant for the
Ife.v men vcho robbed him in Columbia during
fair week by picking his pocket. The
men are in jail in Columbia in default of
m-- $2,000 bond.
The Opera, "The Beggar Prince,"
which is to be played here next Thursday
evening has been presented recently in
Anders.on, Newberry, and Gaffney, and
the audiences at all those towns were
well pleased.
;v\ Our good friend, Mr. 0. G. Rhode, of
" the Hartzog section, has our sincere
thanks for some very fine sugar cane.
Judging front tnat sent to this office, his
cane crop must have been fine, notwith-standing
the drought.
7 If the dispensary profits keep up at the
-yvrAcont rate thfi countv will soon be out
U1-.' of debt and get on a cash basis As will
toe seen by the report published else- ,
where in this issue, the county received a
Rip little more than one thousand dollars as
its share of the profits for the month of
pf " October.
Col. Folk is using his best efforts to
provide good attractions at the opera
house, and should be liberally patronized.
The Peruchi-Gypzene Company is play
ingall this week iu Charleston at the
academy of music. This company is
j& * booked here for three nights, coinmencing
Monday, November 20th.
* Somebody has borrowed my wire
- stretcher and failed to return it. I need
it very much, and would appreciate its
I return at once. C. J. S. Brooker.
Rev. S. Cary Beckwith, rector of the
Episcopal church at Aiken, will conduct
services in the Methodist church in this
city Friday evening of this week, at the
, usual hour for evening worship. The
public is cordially invited to attend.
% '' . Arrangements have been made by which :
?,< Mr. Beckwith will make regular visits
& here and hold services.
The town council wants to hire teams
and wagons .to haul clay and clinkers to
put on the streets, and will pay 20 cents
for two-horse loads of clay and ten cents
for two-horse loads of clinkers. Clay to
be hauled from the large ditch which
drains the town and clinkers from the
cotton mill. Those wishing to do hauling
will report for work next Monday morning.
Lost.?Black Gordon setter bitch, 11
months old. White chest and feet.
Answers to name of "Bess." Gone since
Sunday, October 29th. W. C. Koger.
As will be seen by the notice in another
column, books of subscription to the capital
stock of the Armstron g-Johnson Brabham
Company will be opened at the
law office of John R. Bellinger, Esq., tomorrow
(Friday.) We understand that
Messrs. Armstrong and Johnson will have
the actual management of the business,
Mr Urahham will retain his Dres
ent position as assistant cashier at the
bank.
Bamberg will soon be called upon to
give up one of its best citizens. Dr. B.
D. Bronson and family expect to move to
Ninety-Six, Greenwood county, about the
first of December, and we deeply regret
their departure. Dr. Bronson is not only
a skilled physician, but a most excellent
man and citizen. He and his estimable
wife have both been prominent and popular
in social, church, and business circles.
They are people we can ill afford to have
leave the town.
Rev. Waddy T. Duncan and Mr. C. R.
Brabham have been calling on our citii
zens in an effort to raise"the indebtedness
on the new Methodist church. This
building cost over $12,000, when only
$9,000 was subscribed. There is now
owing about $3,200 on the church, and
those subscribing are doing so with the
understanding that the entire debt is
raised. Generally speaking the subscriptions
have been liberal, and we trust that
the debt will be raised and the church
dedicated. This cannot be done as long
as there is a debt over it.
The Cotton Market
The cotton market still has an upward
tendency. The price being paid in &ambergto-day
(Wednesday) was eleven cents
the pound, and the receipts of the week
were five hundred bales and upwards.
G. Frank Bamberg handles the best
buggies and wagons, yet the prices
are reasonable.
A tODic which is not pleasing to the
taste, lacks at least one great virtue?
SHAW'S PURE MALT is delicious. For
sale at the dispensary.
