Thursday, Nov. 24,1904
Short Locals.
Fine weather we're having these days.
The oil mill was shut down Monday on
account of inspection of its boilers.
Mr. Vernon Brabham has moved his
mercantile business from Midway to Cope.
We put on several new subscribers
this week, and they were all cash in advance,
too.
After the first of December we will pav
highest prices for seed cotton. ,

goods at The Herald Book Store
Nothing but haudsome goods in the stocs
We are marking papers with the blue
mark again this week. It is a dun, anc
we want those who get it to come in and
settle.
Remember that hereafter the price ol

advance and save money.

Son's.
Judge Parker has opened a law office
id New York city and will make his home
* there. He has not formed any partnership,
and will practice alone.
D. J. Delk has left on hand two grain
drills, and as the season is about over,
will make liberal terms to parties who
want to buy. See him quick.
The laughable farce-comedy, "A Box of
' Monkeys," is to be presented by home
talent at the opera house next Tuesday
evening for the benefit of the Epworth
League.
Another lot of those stvlish tan shoes
Ifdr men to arrive at Rhoad's this week.
Mr. P. B. Sweat, the newly-elected town
marshal, has moved his family here from
Blackville, and they are occupying one of
the houses of J. A. Spann, near the old
graded school school buildiug.
Lima beans, something nice, at N. B.
Felder's.
We want to collect two hundred dollars
on subscription in the nest four
weeks, and we ought to do it easily, too.
We have some obligations which must be
met, and we hope those who owe will remember
this.

The blue marks last week did good,
and numbers of our subscribers have
come in and settled up in the last few
days, i There are others who should do so.
Watch for the blqe mark on your paper if

People who haven't got the money to
pay their debts always have money to
buy wbiskey at the "dispensary. Some
men owe us money and have been owing
it for years, and yet we see them drunk
in town every now and then. Yet they
say they cannot pa\T a debt of two or three
dollars.
Something new! just what you want,
at G. E. Bamberg's.
When we of the South are prosperous,

down after our money. And they get a
good lot of it, too. Bamberg ought to
put a heavy license on these aggregations.
It is true they spend a little money, but
they carry away a great deal more than
. they spend.
Fruits of all kinds, also material for
fruit cakes, at N. B. FeldePs.
We want to get our subscription list
entirely paid in advance, and remember
that if you do not pay cash the price is
*1 .50 a year. We mean exactly what we
say. Pay one dollar in advance or ?1.50
on credit. There is no way that we can
figure to come out even at one dollar a
year and then wait until the year is out
before we get it. So come in at the dollar
rate.
The latest designs of jewelry and silver
ware found at G. E. Bamberg's.
Last week we printed an article about
the marvelous corn crop in the West, and
Mr. A. J. Hunter, the great truck farmer
ot this section, concluded he would show
us that South Carolina could raise some
good corn as well. He brought us a stalk
mat Saturday afternoon which measures
sixteen feet in heighth, and it was planted
the 25th of June. Mr. Hunter says some
of the stalks are no doubt taller than this.
Now is the time to buy your Xmas presents

Bamberg county has reason to be proud
of her vote in the recent general election.
In the Democratic primary our largest
vote is less than twelve hundred, and in
the general election nearly nine hundred
votes were polled, only about twenty-five
of which were cast by Republicans. Comv
pared with our primary figures, the gen
eral election vote was the largest of any
county in the State. In other words, we
came nearer polling our primary vote than
:* any other county.
Nice assortment of fancy crackers and
cakes at N. B. Felder's.
There is said to be considerable gambling
going on in Bamberg these dajrs. If
reports be true it is being done almost
openly in some instances, and the police
would have an easy task to make arrests
if they felt so disposed. Why is not some
one arrested? Negroes have been arrested
and fin ad for gambling, but we have
H'?: never heard of a white man being arrestg||.'c
ed even in this town. Young men are
? indulging in this dangerous habit, and our
|town authorities should break it up.
Oman Lodge, No. 38, A F M held its reg/
nlar monthly communication last Friday
~ V evening, at which the Master's degree was
!.*' conferred upon Henry F. Bamberg, D. J.
Delk, and M. C. Sandifer and they are
now entitled to all the rights and privileges.
When the craft was called from
laBor to refreshment, the crowd repaired
to Johnson's Hotel, where a nice oyster
supper was served. There was a good
attendance of the members of the lodge,
and several visiting brethren were present.
The occasion was a most pleasant
. one.
A number of our people are taking in
the festivities of gala week in Charleston.
1 We think it would be a good idea for
the city council to do some work on the
streets.

which all our merchants will have to close

The vote in Bamberg county for bien[

yes to 125 no. The biennial sessions won
in the State by a good majority.

The county board of commissioners
held a called meeting at the court house
last Saturday and changed the commutation
tax from $3.00 to $2.00. The county

just arrived at W. D.Rhoad's.
The trustees of the graded school have
donated to the colored school the old
graded school building, and the school
was transferred to that place this week.
This gives the colored school a larger and
better building than the one they were
using. There are about 150 pupils enrolled
in the colored school.
A. Mclver Bostick, Esq., is packing up
preparatory to moving to Beaufort. We
regret very much to see them go. Bamberg
can ill afford to lose such citizens as
these.. It has been our good fortune to
have he and his family as next-door neighbors
for the past four'years, and we feel
a sense of personal loss in their departure.
Christmas shopping turns to pleasure
when you buy from Or. E. Bamberg.
The town authorities have done well in
the matter of getting after the lewd women
of town. The case on Monday came
up because of the protests and complaints
of residents in the neighborhood where
the woman lived, who felt outraged at the
manner in which vice was flaunted in
their faces. There are other cases which
council should attend to.
To please your lady, get one of those 5

There are a number of appealed cases
from this county to be heard at the November

Those ladies' brown shoes at Rhoad's
are beauties.
All the merchants in town will close
their stores to-morrow (Thursday) and the
day will be made a general holiday so far
as business is concerned. However, we
understand that the schools wilfrhave exercises
on Thursday and give holiday on
Friday. We do not like this plan. If
Thanksgiving Day is to be observed at a 11,
it should be observed by the schools as
well. The children will no doubt take
little interest in their recitations if everyone
else has a holiday. We know that
the teachers have school on Thursday in
order that the children may have an unbroken
holiday, as the suspending of exercises
on Thursday breaks into and interferes
with the work of the children, and
as a consequence little work would be
done when the children come back to
school on Friday. However this may bo,
we are in favor of the holiday on Thanksgiving
Day.
A FRIGHTENED HORSE,
