While The Herald would not have "ap?
plauded" had the relatives and friends
f> of Abraham Surasky lynched Lee Green
* after he was acquitted, yet candor compels
the statement that we would have ex- j
it' pressed few regrets over the affair.
it
No arrests yet in the Eutawville lynch??
ing case, and yet after the investigation
there was no doubt as to the identity of
?? the parties. What are the authorities
j| waiting on? We are afraid it will be just
| as we said last week?nothing will be
| done.
It is reported that Hon. L. J. Williams
S-. is gaining ground every day in the conI?
gressional race. This same report or
statement was made during the recent

ly beaten, failing to carry Edgefield, his
own county.
If the second congressional district is
ever to receive any consideration at the
band of the national government, we
must elect an able and energetic representative
to send to Washington. Edgefield
men have held this position for the
past twenty-five years or more and we
fiave received'nothing. It is a practical
question which confronts the voters of the
second district in the coming primary.
Vote for S. G. Mayfield and you'll get a
man who will do something.
***
The Columbia State is an earnest and
fconest advocate of law and order, of purity
in politics and private life, and we cannot
understand its silence over the Mobley
dispensary letter. Our contemporary
deprecates the use of money and whiskey
in our primaries, and has bravely stood
for the purification of elections. Yet when
a high dispensary employee attempts to
It influence other dispensary employees, it
is silent. We have looked in vain for an
I' expression from this able champion of
t honest and fair elections.
t Everything points to the nomination of
| C. W. Garrls in the first primary, although
|he has five opponents. He is head and
| ihoulders above any man in the race in
| ability, and we mean no reflection on the
Others when we say this. He deserves;
?' endorsement at the hands of the people
. and will receive it. He has only held the
? Office one term and it is an unwritten law
i in South Carolina to give an official two
f terms. Let none of his friends be indif

the campaign for the unexpired term
ie late Geo. W. Croft, L. J. Williams
npted a discussion of the issues. In
>resent contest he claims there is not
gh time to discuss issues, so he spends
ime attacking Mayfield about some
?ssed at the last session of the gen.
issembly. While we are glad he is
wing this line, it is a lamentable con>n
of weakness on his part, for he is
ically saying by his action that he
at cope with Mayfield in a debate on
sues of the day. Really, we are sorr
Mr. Williams. He has made a raisin
running for congress, and while
a good man in some respects, he is
t all fitted for the position of connan.

The Herald most certainly encourages
the coming of practical results or conj^Tictions
in the case of the Eutawville
lynchers, but we stated what we feel sure
Br will be the result of the matter. TVe sincerely
hope to be mistaken, but, after
I? . waiting for several days after the inquest
and nothing done, we felt rather disgust:v~

A Battle in the Bark.
A woman of Muscotah made some root
?? beer, and bottled it before it had fermentjjl
ed, says the New York Tribune. A few
? nights later there was a popping noise in
:the cellar. Her husband believing there
fe were burglars in the house, stealthily ap*%, ;
proached the cellar door. Just as hepeep
ed in there was another report, and he
III was hit. He then poked in the muzzle of
sV a six shooter into the crack, and turning
r. the gun from side to side, fired a fusillade
Of bullets into the darkness. He was then
fj.. out of ammunition, but the enemy kept
?? *"- firing, and he retreated upstairs, "where
?!;- his wife was screaming for help. The,
neighbors arrived and found the man

Violent Attack of Diarrhoea Cured by
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy and Perhaps
a Life Saved.
"A short time ago I was taken with a
violent attack of diarrhoea and believe I
would have died if I had not gotten relief,"
says John J. Patton, a leading citizen
of x atton, Ala. "A friend recommended
Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and
Diarrhoea Remedy. I bought a 25c. bottle
and after taking three doses of it was
cured. I consider it the best remedy in
the world for bowel complaints." For

was in bed at 9.30. Ate onlv plain food,

One of our nearby exchanges tells this
good story and vouches for its truthfulness
: The class in geography was being
examined by the lady teacher in our High
School the "other day. She said: "You
have in front of you the north, ou the
right oTyou the east, and on the left the
west. What have you behind you ?" Little
Charlie, who was deeply interested in
the points of the compass, after a moment's
reflection replied: "A patch on
my pants." Then in a shame-faced manner
he added: "I knew you would see it;
I told ma you would."
A SWEET BREATH
is a never failing sign of a healthy stomach.
When the breath is bad the stomach
is out of order. There is no remedv in the
world equal to Kodol Dyspepsia Cure for
curing indigestion, dyspepsia and stomach
disorders. Mrs. Mary S. Crick, of
White Plains, Ky., writes: "I hav.e been
a dyspeptic for years; tried all kinds of
remedies but continued to grow worse.
By the use of Kodol I began to improve
at once, and after taking a few bottles
am fully restored in weight, health and
strength and can eat whatever I like."
Kodol digests what you eat and makes
the stomach sweet. Sold by Dr. H. F.

TAKEN WITH CRAMPS.
Wm. Kirmse, member of a bridge gang
working near Littleport was taken ill
Thursday night with cramps and cholera.
His case was so severe that he had to
have members of the crew wait upon him
and Mr. Gilford was called and consulted.
He told them he had a medicine in the
form of Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera, and
Diarrhoea Remedy that he thought would
help him and several doses were administered
with the result that the fellow was
able to be around nest day. The incident
speaks quite highly of Mr. Gilford's
medicines.?Elkader, Iowa, Argus.

SHEEP IN THIS STATE.
The Do* is Away Ahead and is Valued Much
Higher.
Some interesting figures are being prepared
in regard to sheep raising in this
State which set forth the need of a dog
law as well as cultivation of proper pas- j
ture lands. These are of special interest j
just now in view of the meat strike and i
the butchers are clamoring for South Car- j
olina meat. The figures show that there
are in this State over 69,306 dogs, valued !
at $437,666. There are also 46,132 sheep I
valued at $112,770, although the latter
figures are thought to be somewhat ex-,
aggerated. It is also shown that the |
average yield from the sheep in this
State was about tour pounas, mat tne
yield from the entire State was a little
over 200,000 pounds. These figures will
be widely distributed by the State department
of agriculture and attention called
to the money that could be made off of
the wool industry here as well as the income
from the sale to butchers. Next
year the dog tax will go into effect and
it is expected that this may cut down the
dogs some.

Are due to indigestion. Ninety-nine of every
one hundred people who have heart trouble
can remember when it was simple indigestion.
It is a scientific fact that all cases of
heart disease, not organic, are not only
traceable to, but are the direct result of indigestion.
AH food taken into the stomach
which fails of perfect digestion ferments and
swells the stomach, puffing it up against the
heart. This interferes with the action of
the heart, and in the course of time thai
delicate but vital organ becomes diseased.
