pspww " ' n.,;- I THE BAMBERG HERALD ESTABLISHED IN APRIL, 1891 J. W. KXIGEditor. ______________ W. Thursday, March 17, 1904 Sb-?' 1 ? t Because a man can manage a liquor "business, it does not follow by any manner of means that he would make a good congressman. * MayfieJd's long experience in the 8tatc Senate makes him the best equipped man f- in the race for congress. He wou'd make 4 _ . the best congressman of any of them. In addition to this, some of the candidates v c are not to be compared to him in ability, **# T? fho nf pATiDTPssmAn Hrnft. thf !*., State loses the services of a man who would no doubt have done much good foi ^ the State in congress. He was eloquent p-/ and energetic and was just serving his ll; . first term. His death, it is said, makes ^ practically certain the election of Mr. L. SpX J. Williams to succeed him.?Columbia fpg. Record. Our contemporary states that "it is said" the election of Mr. Williams is fi' "practically certain." Who said so? We ffife." People down in the second district would : - like to know who it is that is selecting a congressman for us without so much as a gr . "by your leave." That was a handsome advertisement ||> the Columbia State gave our friend, Mrs. pf- Virginia D. Young and her paper, the -v Fairfax Enterprise, in last Sunday's issue, i ; Mrs. Young deserves all the nice things said of her. While advocating equal lights for the women, she has not become js&fc more of the man, but rather added to her g||;^qmanliness of character. MAYEIELD FOR CONGRESS. |f|fe.V The untimely and lamented death of { ; the late George W. Croft, member of congtess, makes a vacancy from this, the P^ Veecond congressional district, that will in ill probability be filled by a special election. Mr. Croft has not been dead a a&u week, vet we find the newspapers naming several positive aspirants for the vacancv. $ v We have no quarrel against these early announcements. With due reverence for the memory of Colonel Croft, we must . leave memory and its past to care for the dead, while we look to the living to find one to take his place, for each Southern district needs at all times an honest and capable representative in congress. SH&/ Without malice toward any candidate, Iib; and disclaiming partisanship j except that &C of a most exalted and justifiable nature, .. we commend the aspirations of Senator I* B.G. Mayfield, of Bamberg county, and we hope they will be gratified. Of all the candidates now spoken of each has had store or less legislative experience, and prof conrse has left a legislative record. Compare them impartially and Mayfiela's leads all the rest. We cannot here recount the number and character of good vjilaws that have run the gauntlet of the past dozen legislatures, driven by his in?;flnence, but we do know that almost every p measure of general effect that has become pilaw in the past twelve years bears the & war marks of his influence. Mayfield entered the Senate twelve rears ago with all the influence of a legL lBlator of experience. The influence of K this strong personality has constantly grown until it is quite certain that there : & not now a more sagacious, industrious or influential legislator in the State. Mr. ^ Mavfield, though he is an accomplished far ana successful lawyer, gave up his proI? fcaainn ahnrit nn? vear aco to aevote him > self to his farm, "so that by voluntary r choice he is allied in interest and destiny f-~ v with the masses of his constituents. Bpr.. Manufacturing constitutes no mean BP*'proportion of the industry of this ' district. If we examine the record BEsv-.'-we find that in the legislative disposition m&fit the recent demands of the operatives in the cott^-i mills of the State, that Hjj&v* Terr young children should not be work> ?d in the mills, Senator Mayfield's sympathies were aroused by the humane plea, but his sense of justice was not vovercome by his sympathy. He don't wt Relieve the grievance of one, however is properly healed by doing a wrong to another, however strong. In the settlement of the question, of child labor in the cotton mills of the State he . saw the strength of the strong, the weakaess of the weak, and by a just compromise banished the wrong. Mr. Mayfield, without regard to friend rep* f or foe, has supported all propositions HggpXto Investigate well founded rumors of fraud in his State or county. With equal seal he has frowned upon that slander ij?'- which grows out of false alarm. v His conduct has been such that his IR* enemies?all really valuable men must make a few enemies?admit that Mayl&v field's place cannot be filled from this M county in future as acceptably as he has ly^:. filled it in the past. Our theory is that a S&'' valuable man here will be a valuable man (v in congress. The book account ot merit of the several candidates lies open to the ! district, and Mayfield's name stands first t vrith the largest credit. Let him, or let * merit, be rewarded. ; BEST REMEDY FOR CONSTIPATION "The finest remedy for constipation I ever used is Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets, says Eli Butler, Frankl vflle, N. Y. The Atlanta Constitution calls attention to the fact that while Ohio is mobbing a negro, Georgia, one of the terrible Southern States that has been guilty of such offense to the negro, is building one a monument. THE BEST COUGH SYRUP. S. L. Apple, ex-Probate Judge, Ottawa Co., Kansas, writes: "This is to say that Ipv I have used Ballard's Horehound Syrup }s . for years, and that I do not hesitate to v recommend it as the best cough svrup I have ever used." 25c, 50c, $1. I hereby announce myself as a candi date for congress from the second districi of South Carolina, to fill the unexpired term of the late Geo. W. Croft, subject of course, to the action of the Democratic party. J. O. PATTERSON. Barnwell, S. C., March, 15,1904. To the Democratic Voters of the Sec ond Congressional District: An all-wise Providence has deprivec von of vour direct representation in thi > lower house of congress, through thi i death of Hon. Geo. W. Croft, congress > man from the second South Carolina ; district. This sad loss of an able public > servant creates a vacancy in a positioi for which it has been my announced in tention to be a candidate in the regula: , primary this summer, and so makes i necessary for me to seek your suffrage . earlier than would otherwise have beei the case, for the unexpired term. I am i | candidate for the high honor of repre , senting the second South Carolina dis trict in congress, and ask your support I am a Democrat, and give full alle giance to Democratic principles. Abovi all, I am a white supremacy Democrat 1 and believe absolutely in the rule of thii ' country by the white men, a rule sc 1 shaped as to bring the greatest good tc the greatest number. I go to the verj fullest length in opposition to anything that savors of race political or socia. equality. These are beliefs which I hole should be advocated at Washington & well as entertained at home. I am eternally against trusts and th< monopolies they build and foster, and pledge my most earnest efforts, if elected to work for relief of the people therefrom. South Carolina is now well represented in the national bouse of representative! by professional men. I would not appeal to class prejudice, but I do ask, ought "hot the farmers of South Carolina, whe are a majority of the State's white voters, to have at least one simon-pure farmei representative in congress? I have been honored by the people oi Edgefield county by election to represenl them in the in the State legislature, and by the people of South Carolina, through their general assembly, to share in the management of the dispensary, and poinl ? VII. 4 .. to my record as a puouc servauii as ?u assurance to the Democrats of the second district that if thev choose me as theii congressman, I will serve them faithfully and to the fall extent of my ability. I hope to have the opportunity of meet ing the Democratic voters of oar district face to face, to fally state from the stumi my position on all public questions, wh let cannot be done in the limits of a newspa per article.
