Ott, of Columbia, are visiting friends in Bamberg. ?Mr. W. P. Riley returned last week from a trip to Hendersonville, N. C., where his family are spending the summer. ?Mr. R. F. Simmons, of the Bowman section of Orangeburg county, spent several days here in the community last week on a visit to relatives. ' ?Mr. J. L. Eddleman, superintendent of the oil mill, arrived last Monday. His family are now in the mountains, and will come here next month. ?Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Brabham and daughter, Gedelle, returned last Friday night from an extended stay in the mountains of North Carolina. ' ?Mrs. H. C. Folk and daughter, Miss Ethel, returned last Friday from Harris r Lithia Springs, where they have been for some weeks. Mrs. Folk's health is much improved. Col. T. J. Counts has moved into his new residence. y Mr. S. H. Saunders is having his residence repainted. A good crowd from Bamberg went on the mountain excursion yesterday. Frank Bamberg ' has in stock is new and up-to-date. No old style vehicles carried over from year to year. They are bought right, too, and are going to be sold at prices that defy ^ competition. t Our readers will excuse the small amount of news matter this week. The . candidates have the right of way in this ' issue, and it shows that they know howto reach the voters of Bamberg county. Mr. Frank Hadwin, a son of Mr. J. t H. Hadwin, who has been in the army in P- the Philippines for several years, returned home recently. His accounts of the people and customs of that country are very interesting. Mr. E. F. Kinard and son, from the lower part of the county, were in the city Tuesday. Mr. Kinard sold a bale of the - '* Sknms long staple cotton, for which he received 8$ cents the pound. Bamberg Iron Works will pay C? cents ^ per pound for old brass. Arrangements have been made for dinner for those of our friends who attend the county campaign meeting here Friday. A fund for the purpose has been raised, and visitors will be given meal tickets at the different hotels. See Brooker'9 fatf stock of hardware. He has the most complete line of goods " in this section of the State. Buys inlarge quantities and pays cash; therefore can sell at satisfactory prices. Mr. Jno. R. Turner, of Denmark has gone into the truck raising business. He told us that he averaged two hundred bushel of onions to the acre, the market * price of which is $1.50 per bushel. He also expects to make a success of raising eSS plant. Bamberg's Social Life. SOCIAL GATHERINGS. There were held within the past week two sociables and one entertainment. The sociables were very largely attended both > times. The first, at Mr. H. J. Brabham's, was held . "IN THE SHADOW OF THE PINES." The large pine grove had its full share >V- - of occupants. Rustic benches and summer houses were on every hand. The demand for dark places and secluded spots was equally as great as the supply. The fish pond, with the cemeuted : * bank, proved a popular resort. Promenades were not altogether missing; but quite the reverse, for the walks, which wind themselves in and out again among the shrubbery and shadows of the pines, were made a source of pleasure. The other sociable was "down where the magnolias bloom." The two stately magnolias which overlook the large lawn of the Saunders place on Railroad Ave*< nue witnessed on Monday evening a sight enough to make one's heart . nuivm ?? 0- -- v glad. A crowd of young people, free from worldly care and from any sorrow, were having one of the many pleasant times -* which the Bamberg social circle is especially noted for. No one to interrupt ^ them, nothing to disturb them, this was the joyous thought of the many light > hearted couples. ON CARLISLE'S CAMPUS. The entertainment last Friday evening at the Fitting School was followed by a big old time 011 the campus. The enter. , tainnient itself was very pleasant; the crowd was not as large as it should have been. The tableauxs were carried out nicely and represented some of the most interesting and popular books of the day After this was over the crowd moved tc the outside, where tables, chairs, and ^ benches had been placed.
