ESTABLISHED NAT 1st, 1891. A. W. KNIGHT. Editor. ThvrsAay, Septeaber 5, 1901. Edgefield county is becoming interested mgpod roads. Nothing pays better, ancHhat county will find that good liighway&will benefit her more than furnishing candidates for every kind of political office. The Greenwood Index has issued an illustrated trade edition, which is a creditable publication. It gives considerable information as to the resources and advantages of Greenwood, and ought to result in much good to that city. In republishing and commenting on a recent communication in this paper from the gifted pen of our correspondent, Mrs. M. O. Lanier, our good brother Wilkes, w of the Circuit Rider, alludes to her as uBro." Lanier. Wrong, brother, but she writes a great deal better than many men. ^ In all McLaurin's political career there m has never been the slightest touch of scandal in connection with his name. He is one of the few men in public life not -who have been attacked alonir this line, but none of his enemies or opponents can bring up anything dishonest or reprehensible in his actions. The first bale of new cotton sold on the Orangeburg market brought Tic. per pound. The first bale of new cotton on the Bamberg market brought eight cents, and both were sold about the same time. How's that for a difference? If our farmer friends want the highest prices for their cotton, let them bring it .to Bamberg. The Orangeburg Times and Democrat, in commenting on an expansion sermon by Rev. J. Walter Daniel, says that such preaching as this is responsible for the empty pews in churches. Our contemporary is sadly mistaken. Mr. Daniel never preaches to empty pews. This writer has listened to him for nearly eight years, and he always had line congregations at every service. ^ , This paper has always worked for the good of the town of Bamberg, and has kept up its work iu season ami out of season. Editor Herald : In the Circuit llider of August 2S, I see my last letter to The < Hf.hald has been copied in part. The 1 editor says: "Bro. M. O. Lanier writes ; an interesting letter from Edgefield to 1 The Bamberg Herald which" I clip in part. Inasmuch as the religious awaken- ! ing alluded to was in Edgefield, I cheer- I ftdW orivo it snare thomrh it's a rouirh re- i ""V " - I ' c ligious racket of dancing darkies." Little did I think my letter would call down on the heads of old Edgefield such a slur! And as I am indirectly the i offender I feel that I must stand ready to i eliminate, as near as I can, the impression < the editor of the Circuit Rider has set forth. i Edgefield has some black chapters in ! her history and has produced some wicked. godless, men, but is she alone in this particular ? To be known to the political world means criticism, uncharitable vernaculars and disfavor. Edgefield has given to the State as many or more brainy men, capable of being true politicians, than ' any other county, and I regret to say, i many of these have been non-religious I men, thus she has gradually gotten a repu- i tation for being within the confines of j heathendom. I think if my pen had the i power to describe the Sunday-school 1 have been attending since tenting up here, j the impressive manner in which the i Bible class was taught, the earnestness of j' the Superintendent?a man just in his ] twenties?the all-inspiring singing, and | lastly the music and exquisite solos rendered by a graduate of the Boston conservatory, who is giving his time and . talents to the Master's work, receiving or 1 rather requiring not a penny in return, \ one would not think the "religious ] awakening" was among the "dancing darkies" alone. I have no axe to sharpen ] on Edgefield's grind stone. I would re- * move a wrong inpression made on any individual or class of people for the sake j of truth. j Coming down to personalities, Bro. Wilkes has unintentionally insulted (?) me ' by prefixing "Bro." to my name.. I have : a high regard for a true man, but just the , least bit higher esteem for a true woman. j "of whom I am which!" j1 Bear in mind there are women, as well as men, brave enough and brainy enough to wield the pen for the upbuilding and strengthening of true civilization. M. O. Lanikk. Stood Death Off. E. B. Monday, a lawyer of Ilcnrielta, ' Tex., once fooltd a grave-digger. He ' says: "My brother was very low with j malarial fever and jaundice. I persuaded him to try Electric Bitters, and he was i soon much better, but continued their use ' until he was wholly cured. 1 am sure h Electric Bitters saved his life." This remedy expels malaria, kills disease germs and purities the blood; aids digestion, ; regulates liver, kidneys, and bowels, cures ; const ipation, dyspepsia, nervous diseases, kidney troubles, female complaints; gives I perfect health. When the cab stopped he alighted, and, slipping his hand into his pocket, he drew out a handful of gold. "Here, cabby, catch," said lie, tossing a sovereign to the man, who still sat on his box. Cabby caught?nothing, and as the coin could not be found he accused his fare of 'bilking" him. "Are you sure it is not in your pocket?" asked the conjurer. Slipping liis fingers therein, he drew out [i sovereign. "Take it ami be gone," he said as he tossed it to the cabby, who again failed to catch the elusive coin. The conjurer, thinking the game had gone far enough, now held out ao-shilling piece. "Here, cabbv," said he, "take this bit of silver; it will prove more substantial than the gold I assure you." Cabby, however, was almost petrified with fear. "Stand back," he roared, "I know you now, though your hoofs are covered with [>atent leather. You don't buy me, Mr. Devil."
