The last meeting of the highway
•omriiissioji in Columbia was an in
teresting one! At this meeting C. O.
Allen, of Greenville, intitHluced the
Hollowing resolution:
“Whereas, it is generally under
stood that the Ashey river bridge is
within the city limits of Charleston;
and
“Whereas, the sum of $350,000.00
has already been pledged from Fed
eral aid funds for the*construction of
i*aid bridge; and
“Whereas, it is now proposed and
recommended hy the State highway
engineer that this commiiss'pn enter
into a reimbursement contract with
county Ojf Charleston for $790,-
808.92, in addition to the above $350,-

to do except to build the road connect- 1 lx* glad to know that she is some bet-

territory will it pafts? We are told Sfr. T. J.dlutto, who opened a store
it w ll pass along through ponds and
marsh lands, where it is said only al-
ligators, mosquitoes, moss : nd rum-
runnei’s can survive-. Besides, this
road would lead to a toll ferry, and
since it has been announced that it is
at Ashleigh eyeral months ago, is
doing a nice business and tilling a
long-felt want in this section.

“Therefore, be it resolved, that this
whole matter he referred to the ex
ecutive committee for investigation
and report.”
It appears from this resolution that
the huge sum of $3.50,000.00 of Fed
eral aid funds has been set aside to
help construct a bridge that is said to
bo within the city limits of Charles
ton,' and that the State engineer is
recommending that the highway de
partment make a contract , to put ap
proximately $800,000.00 more in the
' < >
city of Charleston.
It should be borne in mind that K.
(». Rhett, the chairman of the com
mission, lives in Charle-ton. that this
sunt- of $350,000.00 was allotted to
Charleston before the new members
of the commission went*'into office,
about a,year, ago, and that C. 0. Al
len, a new member of the commission,
introduced the resolution. It should
be borne in mind that those having
business ^with the commission before
its membership was enlarged were
impressed with the fact that the' ac
tivities of the commission were domi-
n:#ted by Rhett,, of Charleston, Lang-
ley, of Columbia, and Heavon, of
Spartanburg, who were aided by
Moorefitdd, the State engineer.
The A>hley riven bridge is i project;
largely‘of loea 1 importance, being on
the route from Charleston to Savan
nah, Ga. It cannot bo said that this
road is ,of * State-wide importance,
sir.ee it serves* m* State-wido connec
tions. The- spending of huge sums of
money on it- ;.t"thi'< time, is indefensi
ble, and sho'uld be condemned. No
wonder that only small antouuts, here
and flu-re, are available,. out of Fed
eral .aid funds, for highways where

I should likewise be its policv nl>t to
buil-1 them to toll ferries. But what
4 I
are mete matters or policy when the
powers that be require a construction
in conflict with it?
Thp State has already contributed
a little less than a half million dollars
to the construction of a bridge over
the Santee river, south of Kingstree,
and upon the understanding that it
Was on the much-talke<l-of Coastal
highway. Hence, it seems reasonable
to insv-t that the highway,department
turn its energies towonstn.p t icg roads
that will put this bridge t > u*- • hy af-
ful^iling outlets lo-Cliarlc-1 - hi. Sumter,
Florence, K ingstree and elsewhere
rather than to building more bridges
at a cost of several hundred thousand
dollars per mile.
The money spent on the Ashley riv

amount bi more than enough to con-,

It is easy to save a small sum each week to
apply on the purchase of a Ford car. The
amount you pay is what you feel you can
afford out of your earnings. You do not
have to sacrifice other necessities. The
“down payment,” so often a handicap, ^s eliminated. A local bank acts as
your depository and allows interest on your deposits.
