He also wishes to thank adver tisers for their loyal support in making it [losdble for him to pub lish a newspaper that is a credit to a town the size of Barnwell. The statement is made without fear of contradiction that for some time past The People has published MORE INTERESTING LOCAL AND COUNTY NEWS AND LO CAL ADVERTISING THAN ANY OTHER NEWSPAPER IN BARN WELL COUNTY. The sheriff and Mr. Robinson walked irffo the kick yard, from which they had seen three negroes move tmveid the house; Mr. Sheppard walked around the other side of the house and Mr. MeElhanney through the house, to find the sheriff and Mr. Robinson in a tussle with the women on the porch, which extends the length of the two back rooms. One ot the negroes— “Son” Lowman. officers said—secured a pistol and started toward the of- ' ffTers^ APtl MeElhanney grappled fW i.lf with him, but the negro escaped into the yard, just as Mr. Robinson had come to the special deputy’s assis tance. From the yard the negro opened fire and the two officers re turned the shots, only to hear from the back yard the detonation of a shot gun. > “O I/ord,” they heard from the sheriff, who had fallen mortally wounded at the corner of the house, '^they’ve killed me. Ti*y to get me u the doctorr”— None of the officers witnessed the firing of the shot, though Mr. Shep pard saw, he said, Claivnce Lowman leave the house with the shotgun and in the meanwhile.the battle went on, ami no one—-the negro woman, who secured the fallen officer’s pistol, ex cepted—reached the sheriff before death. His cry, “They’ve killed me!” were his last words; 1 Bertha Cheatham, armed with Sheriff Howard’s pistol and Annie Lowman, her mother, attacked Depu te Sheriff Robinson. The officer, pursuing “Son” Lowman, motioned her back and she turned again on Mr. Robinson, who had emptied his pistol in the more or less continuous firing. Mr. Sheppard, coming to his fellow’s assistance, in turn attracted her attention. One shot through the temple afid .-he fell on the axe, which stapled her with blood, was carried to Aikctf with the pistol and .shotgun. The coroner’s jury, impaneled by ( owner .1. Tom Tarver, who now be comes sheriff pending election of Mr. Howard’s successor, viewed the body of thu fallen officer. In the absence of Mr. Robins m and Mr. Sheppard, however, the inquest was not held, being instead set for Monday morn ing at 10 o'clock at- the county cmirt house.
