A number <>i radio fans have had
the very ili'se.iiiraging experience of
tubes failing to operate although the
filament still lights. This usually oc
curs to -01A ani] -PP type tubes, and
is a condition often brought on by ex-
eesslve filament voltage.
Outside of the fact that the tube
has been operated at a A-ottage In
excess of its rating, the actual cause
for tile tube to become inoperative
remains a complete mystery to many
fans. What actually takes place in
side of tliis delicate piece of appa
ratus is:
The three-electrode vacuum tube
depends for its operation on the fact
that a heated filament throws off elee-

In the -01A and -!«» tubes the fila
ment Is thorium treated wire. The
reason for using thorium is that this
metal Is ope of the best-known emit
ters of electrons. Now if we use an
excessive filament voltage, the tiny
filament wire will be heated to a
much higher temperature than the
temperature at the' normal filament
rating. Tills excessive heat boils nil
the thorium off the tilniiient. When
the thprliiiu has, been removed from
the surface of the filament wire the
tube becomes dead as far as reception
Is concerned, due to the absence of
i electronic emission to form the con
ductor from filament to plate.

Makes Tubes More Sensitive.
This excessive alternating voltage
applied to the filament bolls the
thorium from the inside of the fila
ment wire and brings It to the sur
face. If this treatment were con
tinued for any length of time It
would soon boil all of the thorium
from the surface, bdt you will notice
that this excessive voltage is used
only for 30 seconds. We now apply
the lower voltage which hakes the
thorium on the suface, thus bringing
the tube back to life again.
Tubes that would not draw the
least amount of plate current and
therefore would not operate were
treated In the above manner and are
now working efficiently.
Many times detector tubes can he
made more sensitive by tills treat
ment. Taking everything Into consid
eration it is an Inexpensive method of
salvaging tubes.—New York Sun.

such reports as were being circulated.

Adjusting Voltage on
Your Amplifier Tubes
-i
Most of us know It Is an advantage
to lie able to closely regulatt* the plate
voltage for the detector tube, especial-
by stumbling feet and careless humps. | ly when a soft or gassy tube is used.
The following is a plan for a radio
set table that may lie Instantly re
moved without lifting or disturb
ance of any kind.
Tiie top is of wood, long and yplde
enough to hold the set and any
switches needed The metal parts are
all easily obtained from a plumber's
supply store. For the table illustrated
a piece of three-ply basswood was
used.
Material List—1 top 28 Inches long.
15 inches wide and % Inch thick;
1 Vi-inch iron pipe 42 Inches long;
Radio
Moved
Table That May Be
Without Disturbance.
1 Vi-Inch fiat head^cT holt 8 Inches
long; 1 piece of pipe that is l(irge
t eno?igli to Just fit over the pipe used
for the arm, 8 inches long; 2 iron
straps of tiie proper size for the arm.
The arm may be made of one piece
of pipe bent into shape or k may lie
made of short lengths put together
with elbows. The holder which ,car-
.xies the arm is fastened to a wooden
.bed Inside the side hdard with Iron
straps. If to he used on an iron lied,
fasten with bolted collar straps.
When properly constructed the top
will turn and also the arm at the
snle of tiie bed. The set can he in
stantly swung out of the way.
The top should lie stained and
waxed and tiie iron parts enameled
black.

questioned them concerning their sad

Many times we are so taken up with
our sorrows and disappointments that
we do not recognize Jesus walking by
our side.
2. His Question (v. 17).
Perceiving their sadness and per
plexities, He sought to help by culling
forth a statement of their grief.
3. Their Answer (v. 18).
His question so surprised them that
they Jumped at tiie conclusion that He
was a stranger in Jerusalem, for the
condemnation and crucifixion of the
great Prophet of Nazareth were so re
cent and notorious that no one that
had li\\ed in Jerusalem could he igno
rant of them. One valuable feature
of the unbelief of the disciples was
that It revealed tiie fact that they
were not credulous enthusiasts, hut
hard to convince. Out of tliis incredu
lity of the disciples developed un
shaken faith in 4’hrist’s resurrection. T
III. The Scriptures Opened (vv. 25

1. His Rebuke (vv. 25-30).
He did not rebuke them for not be
lieving tiie strange stories that they
had heard, but for ignorance and luck
of confidence in the Old Testament
Scriptures.- They had only accepted
such parts of the old Testament as
suited their notions. Men and women
who do not believe all that the Scrip
tures say about the work of the blessed
Savior are entirely blameworthy, '^’he
very center and heart of the old Tes
tament Scriptures set forth the death

For the amplifier it is customary to
use a single plate voltage in the order
of OT^ tl , ur [ n rare cases 120, for
‘tiie two tubes, and let it go at that.
Tliis practice lias been general up to
date because it was found by early
experimenters in radio that a critical
adjustment of the plate voltage on
amplifier tubes was not needed.
Quite a few experimenters are using
a lower plate voltage on the first audio
tube than Is used on the second one,
with somewhat better results, getting
away from all possible distortion due ^
to overloaded tubes.

the adjustment of the amplifier plate

it is more noticeable on the more dis
tant stations.
It seems that tiie {date voltage is
determined somewhat by tiie par' 36-47)
ticular filament temperature that is
used. For example, when we have
the rheostat three-quarters of the way
on we get tiie best signal with a plate
voltage of 45. Increasing * this to 50
.»r 60 volts only gives us a signal that
is very mushy and far from clear. Tliis
can lie cleared up somewhat by ad "
vaneing the rheostat until we have a
similar condition, which gives us tiie
mushy signal and we must again ad
vance the rheostat. I j
It Is a well-known fact that constant
increase of the filament brilliancy will 1
reduce the life of tiie tube.
From the above <>ne would tldnk all
that would lie necessary then would
ne to have either the plate voltage ad- ;
