IMPROVED UNIFORM INTERNATIONAL
Showing Connections for Voltmeter. By a Twist of the Wrist, Condition of
Various Tubes, as Well as Battery, Can Be Determined.
The word voltmeter, as defined by
the technician, is an Instrument for
meapurinj; the voltage, or pressure, ex-
istirig in a given circuit or part there
of. To the nontechnical radio fan a
voltmeter means something quite dif
ferent, in all probability merely an in
strument for ascertaining the condi
tion of his storage or “B” batteries.
Every good radio installation should
have a voltmeter, as it will prevent the
vacuum tubes burning out premature
ly because of excessive voltage applied
to them. A voltmeter also facilitates
the retuning of a distant station In
that it will check up the action of a
rheostat which often plays a very im
portant role.
Although a voltmeter having a range
of from one to ten volts is essential
to one who is desirous of getting the
most out of his set, it is seldom used
because of its expensiveness. The
real fan would not hesitate to puV
chuse such a device for several dollars,
but the trouble Is that a voltmeter is
of little use on a receiving set. If It
used and a suitable switching arrange
ment provided, you will be able to get
the voltage readings of the various
tubes, as well as the battery, by a
twist of the wrist.
The connections for such a unit are
shows in Eig. 1. When the switch
lever Is thrown to the contact on the
extreme left it will be out of the cir
cuit. On the second contact point
(from the left) it will tell ^he condi
tion of the storage battery, the third
contact point will give the condition
of the first tube, the fourth the sec
ond tube and the fifth the third tube.
*
The entire switching arrangement,
Including a high-class voltmeter, is a
well worth while investment as you
will be able to burn your tubes at the
rated voltage and thus prolong their
life considerably.
If you desire to construct the unit,
you should first carefully decide Just
where to mount the parts on the pan
el so tnat*lt should not interfere with
the symmetry of the panel. After you

It is highly important that the dis
ciple of t'hrist should realize that he
is a citizen as well as a Christian. In
telligent Christians will show loyalty
to the state as well ns to the church.
In fact, the better the Christian, the
better the state. The failure to recog
nize this truth has brought Christian
ity intofdisrepute In many quarters.
1, Th* Christian's Obligation to the
be installed and connected nerblw the I'd'e definitely decided \\ here to mount
battery It will tell the closed circuit
voltage of that storage battery and
nothing more. It will not tell the ef
fective voltage applied to the vacuum
tubes, since the rheostat varies tills
greatly.
If you have a three-tube set. It will
bo necessary to employ a voltmeter
for each tube and one for the battery,
which Is not only prohibitive because
of cost, but also because of space. It
would be a ridiculous proposition to
bare four voltmeters on a panel, as
the set would look like a power house
and not like an instrument with which
to listen to broadcast programs.
• However, if a single voltmeter is
. ':L
the voltmeter, carefully drill the hole
and mount It.
Directly beneath the voltmeter
mount the switch lever and the con
tact points and stops. If you are
handy with tools it might be a good
idea to engrave the panel where the
different contacts are. For instance,
the one on the extreme left is “off.’’
the next one is “bat,” the next ‘‘1st,”
next "2(1” and the last one “fid.”
The wiring of the system is not at
all complicated and should present lit
tie or no difficulty at all. In fact the
entire installation should tjot take
more than an hour If one be bandy
with a drill and tt soldering copper.

In order to have a loop that would
turn all the way around as many times
as necessary and to eliminate the wires
attached directlv to the loop that in-

Radio Patriotism Is
Displayed by Mexicans
Do you stand when you hear the
music of “The Star-Spangled Ban
ner” picked up by your radio receiving
act?
Six Mexicans did during the inter
national tests when WGY broadcast
the national anthem from Schenectady.
They were located in a small town at
the foot of the Ajusco mountains, near
the volcano of that name and within
sight of the eyepssmoklng Popocatepetl
and the Snow-crowned peak of Ixtac-
c hlhuati.
“Your concert was so clear, with
such volume, that I cannot help writing
you this card,” wrote Florencls J. Za-
mudio. “You could easily follow the
music of ettch Instrument. The national
anthem, at my request, was heard by
all standing as homage to a nation that

in size, to the tube used. Both spool
and head are fastened to the board
with a small hail. Another larger nail
is driven through the bottom and, with
both feet resting on the projecting
ends and the km*es fixing the upper
end, straight or bank winding is an
easy matter.

State (vv. 1-7).
1. Obedience to the Rulers (vv, 1-4).
This obligation Is upon all Christians.
The reason this obligation Is universal
Is that civil government is ordained of
God and the rulers are His representa
tives. It Is God’s purpose that man
should live under authority. It Is His
purpose because ’ man’s highest good
demands it. To refuse obedience to
civil authority Is to resist God. This
of course does not mean that a Chris
tian at the behest of the state should
do that which is morally wrong, Just
as parental authority does not Imply
that the child Is under obligation to
do*that which Is morally wrong at the
command of parents, hut It does de
mand submission as the law of the be
liever's life. “The Christian frequently
has need to call upon the rulers for
help and personal protection (Acts
18:12-17; 19:35-41; 22:25).
2. The Spirit of SuVh Obedience
(v. 5), It Is to he conscientious, that
is, It Is to be regarded, not mefejy^is
serving a good purpose, hut morally
right.
3. The Nature of This Obedience
(vv. (5-7).
(1) Payment of personal and prop
erty taxes. The citizens who enjoy the
benefits of government are morally
hound to support It.
2) Payment of duties upon merchan
dise and license fees*. The business
exchange between nations must he
regulated. For such regulations ex
penses Incur for which benefits the
citizens shrould pay.
(3) Veneration for magistrates—
“fear to whom fear.” Those who fear
God should venerate His representa
tives, that is, civil rulers.
•%
(4Ji The proper attitude—“honor to
whom honor.” This means that civil
servants, officers of the law, should he
honored because of the ministry they
.perform. . ^
II. The Christian's Obligation to His
Fellow Citizens (vv. 8-10).
, This Is summed up lit the word
“love.!’ Love is a perpetual obliga
tion. Paying of debts Is obligatory
upon all. Christians are judged hv
their promptness in paying debts. The
*4>nly debt that is right to owe is that
of love. -Although we give love to the
full each day. each succeeding day
-calls for It over again. Love works no
to one's neighbor. This love for
bids defrauding in matters of prop
erty;-it forbids going into debt where
there is no reasonable certainty of he
ing able to meet the obligation ; It for
bids defrauding in matters of moral
purity. Where there Is real love, adul
tery cannot he committed, for It is a
rime arailisl one's nclidili.ir
forbids nflliHler. It forbids stealing. It
forbids coveting. It forbids working
ill to one’s neighbor.
III. The Grand Incentive of the
Christian’s Life (vv. 11-14).
This Is the coming of the Lord. The
supreme call is to the Christian to
awake out of sleep. The picture here
presented Is of one asleep when the
sun Is high In the heavens. Life’s
duties can only he properly executed
when one Is awake. The one going
through life without thinking of eter
nity is asleep. Each day -Is bringing
us nearer to the eternal goal and since
that day is at-hand, we should

(v. 12). The works of darkness are
the sins of the flesh such as dishonest
dealing in business, rioting and drunk
enness.
2. Put on the Armor of Light (vv.
12-13). With this armor on the Chris
tian will (1) walk honestly, (2) not jn
rioting and drunkenness, (3) not In
chambering and wantonness, (4) not In
strife, (5) not In envying.
3. Put on the Lord Jesus Christ' (v.

works of darkness Is to put on Christ
