L- >! PAGE EIGHT THE BARNWELL PEOPLE, jBARNWELL. SOUTH CAROLINA. THURSDAY. JANUARY 22, 1925. / CARTER MAY SUCCEED SENATOR J. B BLACK BaniherK, Jan. 10:—With the vaean- « y in State Senate, c aused by the death of Senator Black, who filled this office '.so long and honorably, much speculation is rife here as t«> Senator Black’s successor. Dr. Black was fir-t elected to the State Senate hi lft()5; his service was continuous to the day of his death, and he was re nominated in the primary last sum mer and elected in the fall to succeed himself without opposition. He would have again taken his oath of office at tlie beginning of the forthcoming ses sion of the general assembly. There is thus, a full term to Ik* filled, ami it is understood that an election will he ordered forthwith to fill this 'm- portant office. Jesse F. Carter, of Baml>erg. is bring spoken of prominently in thi.; connection. Many of Mr. ( a’'t' , r , *i friends have heretofore urged him to offer for the State Senate, hut he declined to even consider the mat ter during Senator Black’s lifetime, feeling that the office was being hon orahly and ably filled by the veteran legislator whose remains were laid to rest Sunday. Mr. Carter’s friends now, it is understood, will insist upon his entering the race for Dr. Black’s unexpired full term. While Mr. Car ter states that it is too early to give n definite statement in regard to th,' matter, it is indicated if his friends insist he will make the race. So far, Mr. Carter's name is the only one mentioned as Senator Black’s successor. S. (■. Mayfield in Race. Denmark, Jan. 12.—Former Sena tor S. G. Mayfield of Denmark has decided, after being urged by citizens from all sections of the cohnty, to become a candidate for state senate to fill the unexpired term of the late Dr. J. B. Black of Bamberg. Mr. Mayfield has represented Bamberg County as senator before and 'vn- senator from Barnwell County before this county was cut off. Mrs. T. G.
