A thunderstorm, accompanied by
rain and high winds, swept over this
section between 11 and 12 o’clock Fri-
day night. According to a report by
C^umbia weather bureau, only 12
thunderstorms have occurred in No
vember during the .18 years of that

, Charleston, Nov. 23.—Former Unit
ed States District Judge Henry A. M.
Smith died at his residence here this
afternoon after a brief illness.
Judge Smith was in his 72nd year,
having been born in Charleston \prP
K*. 1853. He succeeded William H.
Brawley as district judge June 14th,
UHl, on appointment by President
W illiam H. Taft, and retired Novem
ber 24th, li'23, being succeeded by
Ernest F. Cochran, of Anderson.
Judge Smith was for many, years
an outstanding member of the bar in
South Carolina and was al-o widely
known for his deep knowledge of his-,
torical matters affecting this section.
He was formerly vice chairman of the
South Carolina historical commission
His service on the city hoard of,school
commissioners of Charleston, on the
hoard of trustees of the Charleston
high school and on the heard of trus
tees of the College of Charleston re
flected his interest in education.

While returning from Laurens Fr-
!ay night, the Hudson sedan of < ol.
Edgar A. Brown, of this city, was
threatened with destruction by fire.
The brake-bands on the car had been
relined recently and wore, too tight,
catl ing the drums to heat. No dam
age was done other than burning out
the brake-lining. ,
