THINK VELVET BEAN
SEED WILL BE SCARCE
Due to the bad weather conditions
coii'istinR of heavy rains during the
first of the season, 'followed by a
period of dry weather, the velvet bea*’
crop is very small. Those who have
U‘cn fortunate enough to have made
a good crop will do Wei) to VfaChey
them early and save as many for
seed as practical. Care should be
taken in order that the beans will not
heat after they, are gathered, whicli
will happen if they contain a great
deal of moisture, and stacked in large
piles, therefore, it is important that
they bp scattered out in-a large house
or store room until r they are thorough
ly dry.
As a soil builder for this territory
velvet 1 leans are unexcelled, and in
addition to that they produce a very
heavy yield of feed that can be well
used with cattle and bogs. 1 have
personally observed land which with
one crop of velvet beans turned' un
der made double the yield the next
year when planted to some crop with,
the same fertilizer as land adjoining
which did not have the beans. This
is to bring this matter to your atten
tion in order that we will have suf
ficient supply of seed to plant a full
crop of beans next year. Any infor
mation desired concerning the proper
care and selection and other matters
incident to getting good seed will he
taken up with me.—H. G. Boylston,
County Agent.
