Aiken, Nov. Id.—James F. Byrnes,
after 14 years of service, will retire
from congress next March 4th and
thereafter return to Aiken and en
gage in the practice of law, accord
ing to a statement^ made by him
several day< ago. Prior to His fir-t
election to congress Mr. Byrnes served
as solicitor of this circuit.
Since his defeat tor the United
States senate by Coleman I.. Blease,
Mr. Byrnes has been resting at home
in Aiken with the exception of the
time spent on the stump campaigning-
for the democratic nominees for presi
dent and vice president, an 1 last week
he accepted a case Irom Barnwell
County, his first in a number of years.

The Treasurer’s office will be on m
for the collection of taxes for the fiscal
year 1924 from Oct. 15th, 1924, to
March loth, 1^25, inclusive. A pen
alty of 1 per cent, will be applied to
all taxes not paid by Dec. 31st, 1924.
A penalty of 2 per cent, will be ap

31st, 1925.
A penalty of 7 per cent will be ap
plied to all unpaid taxes from’ March
1st to March 15th, inclusive—after
