A i>erploxlng problem facing the
radio fan of today is the elimination
of Interference from broadcast sta
tions in and about it great metropolis.
.With its six or seven powerful stations
In operation and whose wave lengths
are somewhat close together, it is
quite difficult to tune in to u given
station without hearing the side bands
from the other transmitters. This
can be more related to the operation
of WEAF on 402 meters -and the new
station WNYC "ti 52(5 meters would
show only 34 meters in difference.
A combination wavemeter arid filter
consisting of it precision vernier con
denser and tapped coil or inductance
has been available to radio experi
menters for some time. With this in
strument the broadcasting listener can
readily check the wave lengths of | ,1 > 1 ‘ ,ul>e l<> momentarily ^‘p It oscil-
broadcasting stations or of the dot
wave length before the transmission
begins. Many experimenters also find
It convenient to have their tuning con
trols calibrated In wave lengths. This
wavemeter can be used for this pur
pose only with regenerative receivers.
With the usual single circuit tuner
the oi>erutlon should make the de
tector tube oscillate at approximately
the desired wave length. The waVe-
meter Is then brought near the an
tenna tuning inductance and the con
denser slowly rotated until a double
eliek Is heard in the telephone re
ceivers.

forthely a* a radio filter to reduce
interference from undesirable stations.
The use of the instrument as a
filter is shown in the accompanying
diagrams. This device will improve
the selectivity of any receiving set.
| This improvement is more noticeable
' when used with the single circuit type
of receiver than with tin* inductively
coupled type. Its use with a crystal
s receiver is quite simple.
There are two particular methods
of using this instrument as a filter;
one is called the. series method, tin*
other the parallel filter. In Figure 1
Is shown the proper connections for
use as a-series filter. When troubled
by interference frihin a, nearby broad
casting station. break the antenna lead
to your receiver and insert the coup
ling coil as shown in Figure 1.
Setting the Coil.
Set the swiicli on tap N (eight turns
In the coupling coil), and slowly rotate
luting, and it click In. the telephones
results; another click is heard when
the tube again begins to oscillate. It
the two clicks occur 30 or 4<l meters
apart, the coupling between tin* wave
meter and the receiver should be loos
ened by moving the wavemeter coll
further away until the two clicks
merge into one.
Ready for Wave Length.
After a little practice in noting the
indication of resonance by tin* double
click method, you are ready to set
your receiver to the desired wave,
length, say, 410 meters. Set the wave
meter at 410 meters and slowly Vary
the wave length of your receiving set
while it Is oscillating. Listen for tin
double click when the receiver Is in
tune with the wavemeter. Move tin
wavemeter far enough away so that
the two cllclis occur very close to
gether. The receiver Is now tuned
to 410 meters. If the fit cans of con
trolling regeneration on the receiver
is altered the wave length will vary
slightly, but this variation is usually
[ less than three meters.
With an Inductively coupled re
the*condenser knob until the desired ; celver disconnect the antenna and pro
signal decreases, va’nishcy 1 and again i teed as mentioned in the foregoing

How to Get Results.
Most people are not accustoiried to
the highly desirable sharp timing
which is obtained from this radio fil

setting without noticing the signal.
Practice first on tuning in a loud

amount of regcneihiion, if necessary.
