Reckless Driving Again.
l.a>,t week The Peoftlo published an
eilit<»*'i«d, calling attention to the
number of accitl^nts occurring on the
public highways . daily and pointed
out the dangers to others of allowing
young childven and drunken, irre
sponsible negroes to drive cars- abso
lutely unrest) icted.
Sunday afternoon the editor of The
People had a personal experience
aiong this line, when # hi. car was
struck head-on hy :» Ford with a
“diunken, ina^ismsihle negro” at tile
wheel. Both cars were damaged anj
one ,of the negro occupants of til"

roadster was cut hy broken glass-.
The general public would “rear up
on its hind legs” and let out an al
mighty howl if railroads allowed in-
"experienced, drunken, irresponsible
persons to run their'locomotiiv'PS - . ‘No
body would ride on the trains. Com-^
meroe would come to a standstill.
condition would not be allowed
to exist very long.
Rut the sj^me public is consent to
build expensive highway^ and then
risk life and limmb on them because
no adequate safeguard- controlling
the driving of automobiles have been
provided. Last week The People sug
gested that every driver of an auto-
moobfte be required to pass an exami
nation. Thus test should be made
quite rigid and a person under a cer
tain age, or one of mental incapacity
or who is addicted to the u-e of whis
key should not he granted a license to
drive. The penalty should be a stiff
sentence on the chain gang or in the
penitentiary, without the alternative
of a fine. In addition, before a license
is issued, every owner of an automo
bile should be required to furnish an
indemnity bond of not less than $">,-
000 or $10,000. This requirement, we
believe, would do much towards a
solution of the present problem.
As long as we build good roads and
turn loo-e fools and drunkards on
them, we may expect to continue to
have accidents, too often with fatal
results and too often with some in
nocent party as the victim.
The People submits the above sug
gestions to Barnwell County’s repres-
entative* in the General Assembly
with the hope that they incorporale
them into law' or give t+n* public the
needed relief in some other way.

E have used Black-

we have had a fam

after 1874,” says Mr.' E.
A. Branstetter, of St.
James, Mo. “It is my first
remedy when any of us
gets sick. . . . We use
Black-Draught for torpid
liver and stomach com
plaints.
' “When I get sluggish
and don’t feel so good, I
take Black-Draught—and
you have to show me that
there is a better medicine
in Missouri. I think it is
fine for indigestion or for
headache. It is a splendid
family remedy. My wife
uses it for any stomach
ailment, indigestion and
biliousness. We never let
the house be without it if
I know it. We also give it
to the children for chil
dren’s complaints, colds or HI
fever.”
Keep a package of Black-

all the family.
Your dealer will eell you a
mammoth package, containing
five of the regular-sire pack
ages. It’s cheaper.
