the best letter written by a pupil of
the Adult Lay-by Schools, conducted
throughout Allendale County thi.»
summer on the subject of “What the
Lay-by School Has Mc.aiLL.to Me.” was
awarded to Mrs. Julia Hoover. Thh
award was made without reference to
constructing or penmanship, solely on
tjie merits of the thought contained
therein. The prize, which was a gold
medal, was offered by Mrs. .1. M. Pat
terson and the jud^-e* were Mrs. P..
P. Searson, Sr., Miss R. S. Arnold and
Mrs. K. Visser. Honorable mention
was awarded to Mrs. 1). M. Barnes,
Mrs. -W. II. Hoover and Mr. Luther
Bunion, to whom Miss Arnold pre-
t-ented copies of the Acts.
Extensive plans arc being made
to give the women of the county a
royal good time at the annual meet
ing of the County Vetlf mtilon of
Women’s Clubsi, to Ik* held at the
Allendale court, hou-e on Saturday,
October 4. The meeting will heghi
with an informal, reeeption from D
to 10 o’clock, followed by a program
which includes several speakers and
also several musical numbers, in ad
dition to the business of the federa
lion. This organization has . since
its inauguration proven a power for
goo<l throughout Allendale . County
and has accomplished much work
among all citizens of the county.
Plans are being made, though not
fully formulated, to hold a free
chest clinic in Allendale County on
October 14 and 15. This is under
the auspices of the County Federa
tion of Women's Clubs, cooperating
with the State Tuberculosis Society
and the State Board of Health.- Mbs
Louise Williams, representing the
former society, is in town at present
making plans for the clinic. Time
and place of meeting not yet ar
ranged.
Her many friends throughout the
community are welcoming Mrs. A.
1,. Cray on her return to Allendale
after an absence of several weeks
•at Savannah, where she Was in the
hospital following an automo.b'de
accident, in which three persons
were killed and two injured. The
other injuied party, Mrs. J. L. Box,
is still in the hospital. Mrs. Cray is
able to walk a little, using crutches.
Another of the schools of the coun
ty opened this week, this being th *
graded school at IHmors. Thirty-five
pupils are enrolled. The teachers of
this school are Mr.-'. Cooding and Miss
Betssic BJakeley. principal.

the crowd bows to the shrine of speed,
ami apto racing has become a prime
sport in America.
Realizing that speed embodies the
present American craving and thaU
automobiles are the embodiment of;
speed, the Georgia State Fair and,
Savannah Tri-State Exposition has ar-|
ranged for auto races this year. The j

been used for auto races on a number
of occasions.
Statistics compiled by the National
Motors Board, under whose sanction
the Tri-State Exposition’s races will
be held, show more race meets will
be held this season than at any time
during the past, - ,
Practically every important fair in
the country is putting on from one to
five days of professional auto racing
and in some instances the horses have
been hacked completely off the tracks,
but both kinds will be held at Savan
nah during fair week, October 27-No-

series will tie watched with keen in
terest. The first game is scheduled
to be played at Washington Saturday
afternoon, October 4th,. beginning at
two o’clock.
