An army of men, uumberintf nobody
knows how many thousands, men Jn
the prime and vigor of their youth,
dropping out of the life that knew
them, leaving no more truce of their
existence than footsteps leave In wet
sand, Is an unexpected epilogue to the
great drama of the war. PrepuratUns
for paying the bonus revealed the dis
appearance of this great number of
men made restless andj discontented
with the humdrum ways of peace by
campaigning and battle and now wan
dering* the earth somewhere without
their families and friends knowing
where they are or even If they be liv

has sailed Into the port of missing men
Just as surely ns If they had fallen In
conflict, says the Philadelphia Bulle;

hind them sorrowing hearts and minds

whites of the eggs and pour Into well-
greased timbale cups and cook for

moderate oven. Turn out on a hot
platter and serve with hollanduise
sauce.
* Caramel Custard.
Melt one-half cupful of sugar In a
smooth Iron frying pan until it Is a
rich brown In -col »r. Heat custard
cups very hot, then pour In the cara
mel, coating the sld*,*- of the cups well.
I’repare a custard as usuaJ for baking
using a pint of milk to two eggs. Add
two tablespoonfuls of sugar as the
caramel will add some sweetness to
the dish. Set In a pan of hot water
and bake until firm.
Maple Cake Filling.
Prepare the usual layer cake and
i use the following: Une cupful of
lnt0 maple sirup, one third of a cupful "f
sour creatii. Pool; until waxy, add nuts
and beat until cool before spreading
