(Prepared' by (he L’nl'e-lIlepartrnrnt
of Agriculture )
There are a dozen reasons why
serceninjfs should lie so|wuatod on the !
farm and fed to live. sf<sj<;k, says the
I’yited States I it*partniont of AyricuF
tmv. Screenings are an und«*sinihle
farm product, consisting principally of
woe.d seeds, cracked and shrunken
kernels of ^rain, chalT, tirokon stems,
and straws, dirt and other fomiyn
material, and often constitute Id to J(i
nor cent of the'J'faln as it comes from
the tliroshor. They sliould not, imw
ovr*r, lie r<k'a rded as a waste, hut
should he turned to valuable account
hy feeding them to live stock.
Gives Screenings Away.
When s'Toonlmjs are sold with the
Krain they a re classed as iloekaife, and !
flic yraln farmer actually# jivos them
away, because his yraln Is docked ac- |
cordlny to the proportion of senvn-
incs it contains. This loss to the irrain
farmer mounts to huge tiyums when
large sections are considered,. In lil'Jo,
for » xample, neitrly PJ.noo.ix^v* bushels
■••f -‘ lu'enings were pr"due**d, Ihn'siied
and marketed as dockage In tin* states
of North I>ukota. South Jiakota, Min
nesofa and Montana. The sum of
SV.TTi.imki was paid by the fanners of
these states for threshing their mreen-
iiigs or dockage, and Smx 1,000 was paid
to the railroads fop hauling it to the
.terminal markets. Millions "f dollars'
worth of good feed was thus given
away. The grain farmer was the loser.
The average screenings are more
nearly mjiial t" oats in composition
than any other common feed. Heavy
scfef'hfngs from which the chaffy
material has been reiiioved are nearly
equal fo corn, wheat, or barley in the
jmreentages of tile various nutrients
More than 1,1«n» lambs could have |
lieen fed with the wheat screenings
that were wasted In tlm four spring-
wheat states in M>li3 forming the on
tire grain ration. The rcsdltlng in* |
crease in weight of the lambs, at 1J
cents per pound, would have brought
.’sN t ,'i<K 1,1 hm 1 to the farmers. Tim spring-
wlieat farmt rs whoTleanecl tlieir niar-
ket wheat on the farm In P.fJ3 gained
over n cents per bushel us a result' of
flie Heating.'
Can Remove Screenings.
When ,a- farmer who gr"%'s little or
no grain wants to feed screenings, lie
must pay high prices for them in a
ready-mixed feed, or must purchase
them "f the elevator «>r mill that has
separated them. The grain farmer on
the other hand, can separate tlmia at
the thresher "t; granary and feed them
as a by-product of Ids farm. He pays
no freight or middleman's comm -sion.
T.y means of a Henning machine, th*'
screenings can ho removed from wimat
' i t ry e at a cost of J or 3 cents per
tills lie’. A mil (her Ilf these cleaning
machines will be in operation in the
spring-wheat states this year as 1 r*-

Specialists of the Fnited States
I (ejiarttneiit of Agriculture engaged
in tlie study of plants pnisor|>us to
live stock have recently completed a
study of the meadow deatli canms,
known scientifnatlly as Zygadenus
veneimsus, which t!i**y say is one of
four species mo-M llsely to 1»e encoun
tered by stockmen using the western
range. The other species are grassy
death yamas, foothill death camiis,
iiiiT mountain death ctunas. The sp,*-

Istir of tho stat**s liordering on the
I’aeitlc ocean. It affects sheep more
than any other class of animals, hut
horses are poisoned hy it and so:ne-' r
times killed. While it is poisonous
to cattle few are injured under range
conditions, ami swine are probably
fr>t harmed at all because they
promptly expel the plant hy vomiting
if they do eat it.
This species of death enmas has
>ut tin* same poisoning- power as
the grassy deatli oamas and those
two are three times as toxic asMiitb.
'foothill variety and seven times as
toxic a- The iitoTiTiTain death carnn?.
Llthotigh it takes about flu* miiii^
quantity of meadow ramus as grassy
camms to produce symptoms nf poi.-on
Ing It takes much more of it to pro
duce death. 1 irnssy death t'amas Is
the most dangerous, foUowed liy
meadow .death camas and foothill
death'catnas which art* aiuuit equally
potent in producing- death.

which was carried <»n by <I». Marsh

Ix?pn-imes Have Hi^h Need*
for Application, of Lime
Best returns ar*- -J'eured from lime,
hy using it for legume crops such as
alfalfa or tfie clovers, says I’. F.
Schoweng**rdt. extension -"il- special
ist of the Missouri College of Agri
culture. This Is true because the
legumes have a higher heed for lime
than any other farm crops grown in
this section and b.*eau<e the nitrogen
living bacteria associated with these
erfrps require a sweet soil in which to
do tlieir work.
When lime is applied and the
growth "f these soil building crops
.made more successful the succeeding
"nip yields are v u!so increased., If,
"h the other hand, the lime' were ap
plied for grain j;rops'ahme the return
would be much smaller,
Where'er farmers apply lime on
wheat land in the next fall or winter
they should, by all mean>, sow clover
the next spring, for in doing so they
will take advantage of their best
chance for a protit from liimng.
Many experiments in Missouri show
that lime ha* increased tlm yield "f
